The Gamecock football team,
already reeling from Saturday's
24-24 tie with Duke, received
another blow Sunday with the
news that outside linebacker Lawrence
Mitchell will undergo
knee surgery later this week and
is lost for the season.
Certflinlv thp. fnnfhall tpum will
miss Mitchell's services, but there
are others to take his place on the
field. Therefore, it is Mitchell, not
the team, that has been dealt the
cruelest blow of all.
Mitchell, a sophomore from
Conway, S.C., was seeing his first
action in three years due to a
player boycott his senior year of
high school and having to fullfill
academic requirements his freshman
year at USC. For those unaquainted
with his background, the
6-foot-6, 235-pounder was not
only a high school all-America in
football, but also managed to be
the MVP of the 1990 South Carolina
high school basketball allstar
game. In fact, Mitchell plans
on eventually playing for the
Gamecock basketball team after
establishing himself on the
gridiron.
After a two year hiatus from
the game he loves and plays so
well, Mitchell was so hyped about
iciuiiuug 10 acuon mat ne was,
according to a teammate, "bouncing
off the walls." His aggressive
play in preseason camp even
prompted outside linebacker
coach Tommy West to call his
star pupil "potentially the best
I've ever coached." West, by the
way, coached some pretty fair
linebackers during his eight years
at Clemson in the 1980's.
But as fate would have it this
past Saturday, Mitchell twisted

I out for
his knee in pregame warm-ups,
then twisted it again on the
game's opening kickoff. The very
first play! Yet after being examined
by a trainer, Mitchell was
tough enough to make it back out
on the field for a few plays.
"I think that says something about
what kind of competitor Lawrence
Mitchell is," USC coach
Sparky Woods accurately surmised
on Monday.
Unfortunately, a Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) scan performed
on Sunday by team orthopedic
surgeon Dr. Robert
Peele revealed serious damage to
Mitchell's left knee. Evidence of
torn cartilage and a damaged anterior
cruciate ligament dictates
that reconstructive knee surgery
must be performed. According to
USC head athletic trainer Dr. Rod
Walters, the operation will be performed
on Thursday.
Mitchell is without question a
superbly-talented athlete, truly
one of the most gifted to wear a
Gamecock uniform. I remember
all too well a pick-up basketball
game at the Blatt P.E. Center last
spring that both Lawrence and I
participated in. It was a full court
5-on-5 affair, and the team I
played on was clearly superior to
our opponent, save for the tall
guy wearing long blue jean pants,
who happened to be named Lawrence
Mitchell.
Despite being surrounded with
four mediocre players, Lawrence
put on a show, scoring 13 of his
team's 15 points in a 15-12
victory.
The game's next to last point,
however, displayed the athleticism
that separates Mitchell from
other mere mortals. On a fast
break, Mitchell, in Levi's, was
streaking down the right side of
the court when a teammate threw
a wild pass that seemed to be
headed for the eighteenth row.
But out of nowhere came Mitchell,
grabbing the ball about two

feet over the rim, and as quickly
as you can say "Air Jordan," he
slammed it through the hoop with
a ferocity reminiscent of a young
Darryl Dawkins. It was aweinspiring,
to say the least.
But equally impressive as Lawrence
Mitchell the athlete is Lawrence
Mitchell the person. Although
he and I are not close
friends by any means, I have gotten
to know him through playing
ball and us both being in a class
last semester.

earth, friendly and non-egotistical
as anyone you could hope to meet
at this university. Sure, it sounds
corny and all that, but its true.
And with all the talk these days
about bad attitudes, ego problems
and misconduct concerning athletes
in general, I believe it
equally important to recognize
those men and women who truly
"have it together" off the court,
field or diamond. Lawrence
Mitchell fits the bill.
Mitchell's knee problem is a
serious one. No matter how successful
the operation, there is no
guarantee he will return to his
pre-injury form.
On the other hand, there are
countless cases of athletes who
have come all the way back from
this type of surgery and returned
to play better than ever. The
NBA's Bernard King is a notable
example, with the Gamecocks'
own David Pitchko another. You
better believe my money's on Lawrence
recovering completely and
being USC's best linebacker ever
before moving on to the NFL.

After two weeks of picks, the
surprises have leveled off and
the pickers have grouped at the
middle.
Coming out on top this week
is Assistant News Editor Gordon
Mantler. Mantler, who the
first week was 10-2 and tied for
second, dropped only three
more games to end up 19-5.
Dropping into second is Assistant
Sports Editor Rich Taylor
at 18-6. Taylor, incapable of
admitting defeat, said "I accidently

ballot. Really."
Mantler, not to be rebuffed,
replied "I don't sweat you."

When asked about his poor
performance thus far, Watts replied,
"I can't lose this many

Bringing up the rear, in more
ways than one, is Copy Desk
Chief Brant Long. "That's cool,
I should get a bye for picking

I'll stick to soccer."

the natives are restless.
