Brown,
By RICH TAYLOR
Assistant Sports Editor
The USC football team entered
Saturday night's game against
Duke as favorites to make the Blue
Devils season-opening prey for the
third consecutive year. With 3:00
remaining in the game and the
Gamecocks nursing a 14-point
lead, a Carolina victory indeed appeared
to be well in hand.
Unfortunately for the Gamecocks,
Duke quarterback Dave
Brown was saving his best for last.
Brown rallied the Blue Devils
for two late touchdowns that
enabled Duke to forge an improbable
24-24 tie with the Gamecocks
before 71,200 stunned spectators at
Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday
night.
Brown's heroics began when the
Blue Devils, trailing 24-10 with
zoi leu uj piay, iuuk uver uu uicu
own 47 following a USC punt.
Three consecutive Brown completions
produced a first down at the
USC 7. After Ray Wright gained
four yards to the 3, Brown scored
on a keeper around right end to
pull Duke within 24-16 with 1:09
remaining. Randy Gardner's point
after sailed wide left, preserving
the Gamecock's 8-point cushion.
The Blue Devils, however, were
far from through.
With everyone in the stadium
anticipating an onside kick, the
Blue Devils' Erwin Sampson
somehow came up with the ball,
partly because of inexperience on
the Gamecocks' return team.
"We had a young player that decided
to block rather than field the
ball," a disappointed USC coach
Sparky Woods explained. "It goes
back to youth again, (just) a youthful
mistake. I wish someone else
on our team would have caught it"

Ah, the days of youth.
That's what USC soccer coach
Mark Berson could've said about
Sunday's game against Davidson
at The Graveyard as the Gamecocks
opened their 1991 season
with a 2-0 win over the visiting
Wildcats.
A freshman scored USC's first
goal and two freshmen assisted on
the second, which makes Berson,
who lost All-Americans Tommy
Loeber and Clark Brisson from
this past year's squad, very happy.
"I was very pleased with the
play of our freshman," he said.
"We had a very good recruiting
class... Davidson is a good team.
The freshmen, juniors, all the upperclassmen;
they all played well."
A large crowd was on hand at
The Graveyard for the first annual
Umbro Kickoff Classic, and it was
22 minutes into the match before
anyone could get on the
scoreboard.
That's when freshman Bill

pass into a 25-yard gain to the 24.
After hitting Walter Jones for 10 I
more yards to the USC 14, Brown a
found Marc Mays in the end zone
for an apparent touchdown.
The score was negated, however,
by an illegal procedure call pj
against Duke, giving the Game- M
cocks a temporary reprieve. Un- W
daunted, Brown connected with r
Brad Breedlove on a 14-yard gain M
to the USC 5. But with Duke out
of time-outs and the clock winding H
down, time seemed to be on the
Gamecocks' side.
Instead, the officials stopped the
clock with :11 left, enabling Duke
to line up for a play. Brown
quickly spiked the ball for an incomplete
pass, stopping the clock
at :04.
Woods was mystified by the
clock stoppage.
"I'm a little confused at why f
they stopped the clock with 11
seconds to eo when thev caueht
the pass," he said. "It was not a
first down." \
One play remained, and Brown v
delivered for the Blue Devils. With i
no time left on the clock, he hit
Jones in stride crossing over the
middle, culminating a 6-play,
49-yard march with the 5-yard
scoring toss. Suddenly, Duke was
within a two-point conversion
from leaving Columbia with a tie.
Not surprisingly, Duke again
went to the air. Brown rolled right,
then passed back to the left flat
where tight end Aaron Shaw
bulled his way into the end zone
behind a pair of blockers. The
Duke bench poured onto the field
in celebration, while what remained
of the partisan USC crowd
stared on in near disbelief. s

Baumhoff, getting the ball just out- <
side the goal box, looped a shot
towards goal. Davidson goalie i
Doug Long went into the air but ]
could only tip the ball, which fell ]
behind him into the net. Junior ]
Chris Crosby assisted on the goal.
Baumhoff would also set up the (
USC's other goal at the 35:52 <
mark of the match. Taking a cross i
from fellow freshman Chris Fak- i
laris, Baumhoff headed the ball
towards the right side of the goal.
Senior captain Andrew Coggins,
who led USC in scoring this past
year, then headed the ball past
Long for a 2-0 advantage.
Both teams had opportunities in
the second half, with Faklaris and
freshman Jamie Posnanski each
coming close to scoring for USC.
Long and USC goalkeeper David
Turner recorded six saves each in
the match. The Gamecocks narrowly
outshot the Wildcats 15-14.
"For an opening game against a

Berson also praised the play of
Crosby, who, playing with a broken
nose, held Davidson forward
Rob Ukrop in check and freshman
Rob Smith.
"Rob Smith is very important to
our defense. When he came out today,
that's when Davidson had
most of their attacking opportunities.
Crosby did a great job being
assigned to mark Rob Ukrop," he
said.
USC, 1-0 and ranked No. 11 nationally
in the Soccer America preseason
poll, plays host to Presbyterian
College on Wednesday. Berson
said preparing for the
Davidson match has allowed him
little time to scout the Blue Hose.
'They are a team I don't know
much about," Berson said. 'They
will be an experienced team, and
they are very well coached. It will
be a challenge, but I'm glad to
have this game under our belt."
Wednesday's kickoff is at 5

Shaw came with USC linebacker
Robert Gibson hanging all over the
Duke quarterback. Incredibly,
Brown switched the ball from his
right hand to his left before somehow
managing to complete the
touchdown pass, which pulled
Duke within 17-10.
Freshman Norman Greene
scored USC's final touchdown by
recovering a bad Duke snap on an
attempted punt in the end zone.
The score put the Gamecocks up
24-10 with 3:40 left in the third

Brown finished with 323 yards

Gamecocks. Rob DeBoer led all

also had 23 yards on only 6 attempts

For the Gamecocks, Robert

team in receptions with 4 for 37
yards and 3 for 37 and two touchdowns,
respectively. Aaron Shaw,
who caught the game-tying two
point conversion, had 7 catches for
66 yards for Duke.
Inside linebacker Joe Reaves led
the Gamecocks with 11 total
tackles.
