Following the 1990 season, the former high school AllAmerica at powerful Valdosta High School sat out spring practice to concentrate on his academic work. Whitman, a 6-foot-4, 238-pound junior from Lebanon, Pa., played in all 11 games last season as a back-up tight end and special teams member. He came on strong in spring drills, ultimately receiving the Joe Morrison Memorial Award for his performance. Campbell came to USC in 1990 from North Augusta (S.C.) High with a reputation as one the top high school tight ends in the nation. He played sparingly as a true freshman last season, but is being counted on to see extensive playine time for the Gamernr.h this jward of "I suspect he's not," Woods replied. "I suspect he's taken himself out of it. He's not in school, which has started. I think he probably planned to leave the team for whatever reason when he carried his stuff out with him when he left. "I'm just worried about him. I'd like to find out where he is and if he's alright. I've asked the players to let me know if they see or hear from him, but apparendy they have not." The good news is that Whitman and Campbell continue to perform well at tight end. "We'd rather have him (Steward) than not have him," Woods explained, "but both Mike and Matthew are doing a real good job." Steward was the Gamecock's sixth leading receiver last season with 18 catches for 212 yards. He scored one touchdown, a 32-yard grab that came on fourth down in Out-Lm?or You! for you.
