Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as twin brothers in his umpteenth martial arts movie. Double Impact is not bad for the genre, but it could have used some serious editing. The plot is simple. Brothers Chad and Alex (both played by you-know-who) are separated at an eariy age wnen tneir parents are murdered by the Chinese mafia. Chad is raised by his parents' bodyguard Frank (played by Geof- | frey Lewis) in Los Angeles; Alex is raised on the streets in Hong Kong (ironically, the brother from L.A. is the suave, peaceful one). Chad and Alex reunite in Hong 1 Kong to avenge their parents' i deaths and generally kick some 1 butt The Hong Kong mob is run < by an evil Chinese guy and his evil 1 British partner. They have a variety of cool assassins working for 1 them, including a killer female < named Kara (played by body- i builder Cory Everson). f Jean-Claude acts better than < ever in his dual roles. Even with- a out the brothers' different hairstyles and clothing, I could tell s which one was which from Jean- r Claude's acting. While I'm on the subject of Hong Kong, it should be said that lirector Sheldon Lettich (who covrote the script with Van Damme) limed the city very well, showing >ff the city's exotic atmosphere ind people. Similarly, Van Damme's twin icenes were well filmed. Only arely was it clear that a double was being used instead of one of the Van Dammes. When both brothers were on the screen at the same time, the matting effects proves i Southern neighbors. Georgia finished 39th. In Hot Shots!, Charlie Sheen ind Lloyd Bridges spoof movies From Rocky to Gone With the Wind. However, the movie that receives the most ribbing is Top jun, Tom Cruise's hit about Navy Ely-boys. Every aspect of Cruise's vehicle is covered here. A great piot for a father who gets disgraced, he mental problems with carrying lis memories, a beautiful love inerest (Valeria Golino is five times is sexy as Kelli Mcgillis), a langerous mission, a rival pilot, uid so much more. Charlie Sheen plays Topper Parley, the Navy pilot with the atitude. Writer Pat Proft and Direcor Jim Abrahams put together ;ome great slap-stick comedy. Joyd Bridges is great as Admiral Benson, leader of the squad, who leems to have more body parts renoved than victims of Jeffrey Jahmer. I only wish this plot-heavy * movie didn't take so long to get 5 going. The plot isn't that compli- j cated, but it drags for a long time in the middle before the inevitable s conclusion where the two Van J Dammes rescue their friends and j kill all the bad guys in a variety of * interesting ways. J The last twenty minutes is wall- [ to-wall violence. This conclusion J reminded me of most karate Nin- 1 tendo games where two guys rumble through an enemy fortress, * facing one colorful assassin after f another until they beat the evil ^ leaders.
