When did you decide to become 1
a coach and why?
"I think that as I evolved 1
through my educational years,
grade school, junior and senior '
high school, I became very com- 1
mitted to athletics and it was a :
great motivation to me educationally.
My high school coach, How- 1
ard Sharpe, had a great imnpact 1
upon me as an individual and an
athlete. I felt he influenced me a
great deal as far as a vocation. I
hope one day I could be a high
school coach like him and one day
have the chance to compete in the 1
Final Four of Indiana. That was a
big thrill at that time. I think my
goals were pretty well established
to be a coach in my high school
days. I was honored during those
years to be selected to the Silver 1
Team. That was quite an honor
and the team's listed in the Hall of
Fame." I

"I enjoy and I think our staff en:

that come with athletics. I
think the opportunity to make an
impact on a young person and
maybe make a difference is really
the bottom line. Coaching puts you
in a position for hands-on relationships
with people and I feel helping
young people reach their full
potential on and off the court is
extremely rewarding. We believe
in the total-person concept and we
work very hard to implement a
system that not only deals with
games, competition and athletics,
but also emphasizes spiritual life,
education and family life. We
think it is a total picture. We enjoy
the challenges that come with putting
together a program and not
just a team. We hope that we can
become a basketball family that is
close-knit and a joy to be with as
we work toward our lofty goals.
As for any dislike, I really have
been able to whistle going to work
most days. Job satisfaction is more
important to me than anything
else. Being a positive thinker, I try
to eliminate the negatives and view
challenges as opportunities. I think

In athletics, especially on the col- g<
lege level, discipline is a big re- si
sponsiblity of a coach. When tc
four football players at Georgia aj
Tech got in trouble, coach Bobby w
Ross kicked them off the team l
entirely. Yet, no matter what \
Arkansas hoopster Todd Day p
does (sexual assault, cheating on ^
final exam), he is only slapped
on the wrist. How do you ap- a
proach team discipline? Vl
"We believe in self-discipline sj
and the responsiblity that comes
with being a student-athlete repre- $
senting a university and the state b;
as a whole. With that comes the n
responsibility to be in good stand- s,
ing both in the program and in the c<
university. Anything that would tc
take a student-athlete out of good ai
standing would certainly have to tf
be dealt with according to our pol- c<
icy. We do have a policy that we n\
feel is sound, fair and consistent ei
and we like to get our student- ?
athletes to help formulate the policy.
We've asked them to honor it
Q]
and be committed to the high standards
that we set. I think discipline S'
is very important. I think that discipline
is doing everything you can ^
everyday to the best of your ability
to reach your full potential. We .S1
certainly have high expectations of e
our student-athletes and will not w
condone actions which will bring &
discredit to the individual or his ?

I think we'll be formulating our pi
