JSmmm j Tonight at L (if necessary) ^ June 14 c June 164 World League ei with big turn-ou By DAVID BOWDEN Editor in chief You don't need a translator to \ figure this out: Europeans love 1 American football. The World a League of American Football com- a pleted its first season Sunday, with ^ the London Monarchs being d crowned WLAF Champions in ^ front of over 61,000 screaming ? fans. ^ London is by far the best team c in the league, with some genuine ^ NFL-caliber players. In particular, look for London wide-out Jon Hor- c ton to be a starter in the NFL ^ somewhere next season. Horton, a 1 former pro basketball player in C Mexico, averages one touchdown every five receptions. To be sure, ^ he is not guarded by cornerbacks a the level of Darrell Green and Al- * bert Lewis, but Horton does have c the hands, leaping ability and flat- s out speed to cut it in the NFL. v Another player NFL scouts are s sure to be looking at is London ^ nnortorKool- Cton riol Kmi rrVt Uic C kjuai ivi uaviv uian VJ viuauga* nu excessive number of interceptions ^ is probably what got him cut from ^ the NFL in the first place, but his * poise and leadership make him a l! winner, and that certainly puts him head and shoulders above the likes of Vinnie Testeverde. Gelbaugh f( may throw an INT, but never at a 11 critical moment like the aforemen- v tioned choke-artist. Gelbaugh s brought London back from a 17 a point deficit to beat the New York/ New Jersey Knights in the first ^ round of the playoffs. ^ The best reason USC fans had ^ for pulling for London was their ^ star nose tackle Roy Hart, formerly c of the Gamecocks. Hart leads Lon- ^ don's "Hart Attack" defense and if 0 that isn't enough reason to root for f; London, I don't know what is. 11 Hart was double-teamed through- ^ out the game by the hapless Dra- 0 gons' offensive line. Later, Barce- ^ lona coach Jack Bicknell called the ^ presence of a former Gamecock ^ "the deciding factor" in London's Sl 90.5" WIICI iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiWV w J ^ I $50 MINIMUM EA I Your plasma Is needed if y< I had anv of the following infet I Mononucleosis Strep Throat Chicken pox or shingl Measles 1 " 1 ; Is a llll1 i; :0^ Ptil^ni .1 III takers 86 :? s rd Game . , Lakers 96 (ot) \ rm Game:iiiiii?iiiii? ? m Lokers MpA :JSP r .v.y.v.%%v.v.;.'.v.X?X\vX\v-X'XvvXvX'XvX'X jr;XjI;XC;I%;X*X;IwX;*;-;X;Xv*%vXv/>Xv.%v.v.;.%' vX*X*XvXvX'X-X'T'XvX'Xvv ti Game e |gg|peles^9 PM u HHiHAiiii c . |?i|p|lg?lll iilllillllilfl f n enth Game n Jt Chicago, 7 PM P?F';-* a ' ^ ; : " I I ids first season it in Europe >1-0 victory (just kidding). While many American football ans make fun of the new league, i _ r* ?- J ? u> popularity in Europe is unaeniible. London's Wembley Stadium iveraged 30,000 fans fa* Monarch lome games and more than loubled that attendance for the Vorld Bowl. The Barcelona Dragons and Frankfurt Galaxy also Iraw big crowds, especially when me considers that American football is a recent arrival in Europe, rhe only close analogy in Amerian terms would be if 30,000 Americans showed up every week ,, o see a lacrosse or jaialai match not bloody likely). London fans are some of the -1 >est football fans I have ever seen, nd that is no joke. They make tedskins fans seem reserved by omparison. The Brits broke out in ong everytime the Monarchs < vould do anything. The fans < tayed on at Wembley, waving lomemade Monarch banners and fleering like lunatics, well after ; he game was over. The whole sta- ; lium sang Queen's "We Will ] lock You" many, many times as he Monarch team took a victory I ap around the field. As ABC's 1 )ick Vermeil pointed out, the 1 sam showed a lot of class by stay- 1 tig and celebrating the victory yith its fans. I have rarely seen i uch enthusiasm for any sport at < iny level in the United States. 1 The only North American World 1 ,eague teams with anywhere near < hat level of fan support are the ] lirmingham Fire and the Montreal 1 Machine. Birmingham and Monreal are similar in that they had i oth lost pro football teams previ- ? tisly. Obviously, their vociferous I ans are glad to have football back < i town. It is particularly good for c dabama since the state has some c f the most intense football fans in tie nation, as well as being the ome of a few moderately successill NFL players such as Bo Jack- v on and Bart Starr. 1 - FK""'"90.5 > I iiiiiiaiiiiiiiutiiiiiiii v lCH DONATION ' du have or recently have :tions: Mumps Chalmydia les Herpes erologicals 719 Middlebu'g Dr. uite 105 olumbia, SC 29204 103) 254-6537 TOR STUDENTS * Coach Bla< Jy RICH TAYLOR "Coach Sports Editor thing," ^ Jimmy Black, acting head coach happy foi >f the Gamecock basketball prog- him go. ] am since George Felton's dismis- the family al last month, has been named an "He w; issistant basketball coach at the Manning < Jniversity of Notre Dame. No one shudders over the garnet and black, as they do over that UNC Blue. We do not have a BIG-time basketball program, and we haven't for a very long time. George Felton was hired to clean up the USC basketball program, and he did. But as soon as be was through sweeping, mopping and waxing Frank McGuire Arena, Athletic Director King Dixon let him go. As he should have. So now King is looking for someone to make as a competitive team in the powerful Southeastern Conference. He has a difficult task at rand. So far the names of potential candidates hat have been circulating throughout newspapers are far cries from the likes of Dean Smith or Bobby Cremins (with the possible exception of ^arry Brown). Indeed, a number of the candidates are very espectable people in the sport. Few, however, ire truly qualified to meet USC's needs, those >eing an excellent player graduation rate, the ibility to generate fan support to keep atteniance up, as well as experience and respect as a college head coach. Let's review the candidates: Alex English, ex-USC star. English is obviously a great basketball player, but is cerainly not ready to be head basketball coach of i major college program. However, he could be i great teacher and motivator to our players >oth on and off the court. The next head coach vould be wise to consider English as a potential issistant coach. Adams, who starre id: gritty he high school, when Glymph's Shamrocks used to beat my Spring Valley Vikings so badly. He is undeniably a great coach, but not equipped to be a head coach in the SEC. If he is intent on moving from high school to the college ranks, I think he would be a great recruiter, especially in dealing with players' parents. He is another attractive assistant coach possibility. Jerry Green, Kansas assistant coach. Green would obviously fit Joe Rhett's idea of a suitable coach. Since first hearing his name, my interest has been peaked. I respect the Kansas program, and with his South Carolina background, he may be hired. I only question whether an assistant is ready to become head coach of an SEC team. Brian Winters, ex-USC great and Cleveland Cavalier assistant. Enough said. I don't think we should hire another alumnus. We already have Bobby Cremins upset with our program for firing his close friend. Additionally, Winters hasn't seemed to be very interested in the job. Mike Deanef Sienna head coach. Deane has reportedly expressed interest in the job, but although his team defeated the Gamecocks in the N.I.T., they weren't in much better shape than we were with Felton. And how many teams really brag about winning an N.I.T. game? Butch Estes, Furman head coach. Estes, a UNC graduate, has a solid 97-76 record at Furman. But despite his head coaching experience, my feeling is that USC and Estes would not be a good fit. Perhaps my opinion is influenced by the 41-point whipping our Gamecocks laid on his Paladins last December. Larry Brown, San Antonio Spurs head coach. Let's get real on this one, what man in his right mind would leave $700,000 a year to come to USC? "We are in r had in its the process of rebuilding the team, and this gives us two early firstd for the round picks." ad coach built successful programs at UCLA and Kansas, yet left both teams with probation. If his selfprofessed innocence in both situations is in fact legitimate, his experience and winning record cannot be ignored. What USC fans, as well as Joe Rhett, need to realize is that we aren't going to get a Dean Smith this year. We aren't going to win the SEC championship this year either. King Dixon should be looking for someone young enough to build a solid program, old enough to have experience as a head coach, able to realize graduating players is a crucial part of the program and gutsy enough to take a job that has been marked by instability over the past decade. This brings me to Russ Bergman, Coastal Carolina's head coach. Here Joe Rhett and I disagree. I think he is ready for the challenge of a big-time college program. He took his Chanticleers to the NCAA playoffs, and almost upset heavily favored Indiana in the process. No small feat. What impressed me even more about Bergman was that he was not coaching the nation's most highly recruited players, nor was he at a school with a booster program like the Gamecock Club. He places a great emphasis on graduating his players, and he enjoys a positive media image. He, like other coaches at Coastal, is adept at landing in-state players. I can only imagine the players he could recruit with the facilities USC has to offer. He has earned my respect as a coach and a person. This is not a good time to be looking for a basketball coach. But we need one. So by July 5, King Dixon will announce our new head basketball coach. Then it will be up to the fans to keep attendance up, provide positive support to the program and remember that even the best coaches lose ball games. Without our support, the new coach might as well not even accept the job. i f _ . . . ray vvvir\o oug * . .. . ^The United Way Is lOt jUSt the day The Way Of Low. ) the money." low prices on I ner fashions!
