The doctoral gown is full flowing
and has large bell shaped
sleeves. It is also different because
it has velvet panels on its front and
velvet chevrons, V-shaped bars, on
the sleeves. The doctoral gown is
usually black, but the trim is usually
the color that signifies the
wearer's discipline or university.
The motorboard is also an essential
part of the graduation outfit.

students wear the tassel on the
right before receiving degrees and
shifting it to the left after receiving
a degree.
USC has its own doctoral gown
which is garnet with black velvet
panels and chevrons. The University
seal is embroidered on the
panels. The gown is also worn by
the Board of Trustees, honorary
degree recipients, system administrators
and some candidates for
doctoral degrees.
