Gamecocks back on track
USC's track and field squad commenced its 1991 outdoor season
with a solid performance at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Phillipe Williams, one of two returning Ail-Americans for the
Gamecocks, quickly picked up where he left off this past season. Williams
scored 7,489 points in the decathlon to become a provisional
qualifier for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.J on
May 29-June 1.
Also sparkling in their initial performances of the season were:
Steve Owens, who scored 6,760 points in the decathlon; Ron Willis,
with throws of 49-10 1/2 in the shot put land 136-2 in the hammer;
Scott Capell, who tossed tire shot put 47-1 1/2 and the hammer 143-6;
Ricky Kerns and Adrian Bonner, with respective times of 1:56.33 and
1:58.13 in the 800 meter run; Chris Love, who turned in times of
22.09 in the 200 meter dash and 48.12 in the 400 meter run; and
Brian Robinson, who was clocked at 3:56.96 in the 1500 meter run.
The Gamecocks will have a week off before resuming action at the
University of North Carolina's Invitational on April 6.
Duda, tennis team improve
The 25th-ranked Lady Gamecock tennis team downed Trinity
(Tex.) College 7-2 Monday afternoon at Maxcy Gregg Tennis Stadium.
USC improved to 7-9 as Trinity fell to 2-11.
USC's Michelle Duda, who is 5-0 since moving to the number one
singles position, defeated Alison Fleming 6-0, 6-2. Fleming did help
account for one of Trinity's only two wins on the day, though. Fleming
teamed up with Michelle Bougard (Trinity's only singles winner
in a grueling, hard fought 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Robin Deitch) to
defeat USC's number one doubles team of Nathalie Rodriquez and
Mandy Nail 3-6,6-1,0-3.
Rodriquez and Nail both triumphed in their respective singles
matches, however. Rodriquez downed Nancy Webster 6-3, 6-1 and
Nail triumphed over Stephanie Desmond 6-0,6-1.
Also posting wins for the Lady Gamecocks were Natalie Acacio
(1-0 over Trish Balles), Nina Castillejo (6-2, 6-1 over Aimee Shoemaker)
and the number three doubles team of Acacio and Castillejo
(6-1,6-0 over Desmond and Shoemaker).
USC will compete in three other dual-matches as the 1991 season
heads into the home stretch. USC will compete in the North Carolina
Quad competition Sunday against fifth-ranked Duke, 16th-ranked
BYU, and UNC.
Lear, USC sweep Toledo
USC's lOth-ranked softball team defeated the University of Toledo
4-0 and 4-1 Sunday to improve to 24-4 on the season.
In the first game, the Lady Gamecocks scored three runs in the
bottom of the fourth to bury the Lady Rockets. The inning was highlighted
by a two-run homer by infielder Cheri Laskowski. Shortstop
Tiff Tootle and infielder Michelle Delloso led USC with three hits
each. Pitcher Angie Lear improved to 16-2 on the season by allowing
only four hits.

a run. Left fielder Toinette Reed scored two runs also. Jana Zimmerman
gave way to Lear with two outs in the top of the sixth and Lear
ran her record to 17-2 as she picked up the win.
The Lady Gamecocks will play host to its first softball tournament'
of the 1991 season this weekend. The USC Round Robin Tournament
will begin Friday. USC is scheduled to meet Northwestern at 3 p.m.
and Dayton at 4:30 p.m. Play continues on Saturday, with the Lady
Gamecocks taking on Toledo at 1:30 p.m. and and South Florida at
4:30 p.m. On Sunday, USC plays Florida State at 1:30 p.m.
Golfers olace in tournev
USC's men's golf team placed fifth in the Wofford Invitational
three-day tournament this past weekend turning in a team score of
891. The Gamecocks finished 14 strokes behind North Carolina State
who capturad the tourney championship.
Sophomore Carl Paulson, who lowered his season stroke average to
74.3, scored a total of 220 strokas (72-74-74) to tie for 10th overall in
individual performance to pace the Gamecocks. Teammate Brett Quigley
tied for 19th placa overall shooting a three-round score of 224
(74-72-78).
Gamecocks Robert Dargan, Michael Christie and Daniel Seawell
finished the USC tandem placing 34th, 44th and 47th, respectively.
On the weekend of March 15-17, the Gamecocks braved 40 mph
winds, rain and cold weather to bring home the Palmetto Intercollegiate
tournament victory by firing rounds of 293-292-302-887. USC
had bour of its top five players place in the tournament's top 10 overall
individual performances. v
'The young men deserve all the credit for withstanding the Conditions
and the pressures involved in getting to that wmers circle," USC
head coach Steve Liebler said.
The Gamecocks will travel to Greenville this weekend for the Furman
Invitational, USC's fourth event of the season.
