Shame USC ex-president is continuing to humiliate administration With the indictment of ex-President James Holderman by the Richland County Grand Jury, the university once again receives national embarrassment. USC has never been a stranger to controversy; some of it has been unwarranted, but some is welldeserved. President Holderman has had a lot to do with our public relations problems. From the salary of Jehen Sadat to the "loss" of the records ol the Carolina Research and Development Foundation, Holderman has been giving USC a generous helping of unwanted publicity. Holderman's great job at building our international programs has been negated by this infamy. Few colleges in the nation have been as consistent sources of scandal (both academic and athletic) as the University of South Carolina. Besides his local trouble, the Internal Revenue Service is also investigating Holderman. While he is innocent until proven guilty of tax offenses, he is definitely guilty of USC's national humiliation. The students of USC have been more critical than ever of their school. They feel betrayed by the people to whom they pay their hard-earned tuition. The faculty should be mad when they get underpaid at the same time their president goes to Hawaii on university money. The administration should be mad at Holdeiman too. The admi- ( nistration of USC is mostly professional, competent and honor- \ able. Holderman is guilty of sullying their reputation through his antics. And he also cost Arthur Smith, a capable administrator and provost, the presidency of Florida State University. With a former president indicted and USC's prestige at a historic ebb, there is only one thing to say: John Palms, welcome to USC. There are morons in this world, and then there are morons with guns. I was flipping through the newspaper a few Jays ago, and I saw this story about a guy shooting his hunting buddy out of a tree bemuse "he looked like a squirrel." When will that technology stop! Now they're making six-foot squirrels. Like I said ? there are morons in this world vith guns. And do you know what's even more amazng, there are close to 2,000 more of these accilents a year. Just to help you hunters out there a little bit, lere are a few pointers to prevent the killing of 'our buddies. Dump trucks are not overweight deer. Preparing a letter that will be sent to every in-state student and their parents listing their state legislator's phone number and address. The form will be forwarded to the Associate Dean of each respective college. Yet, the NRA says the media hypes all of these gun accidents. OK, that's why there is an average of more than 2,000 shooting fatalities a year. I do agree with the NRA that when a burglar comes in your home, you should have a gun strong enough to stop a charging elephant. But let's at least make sure the people are smart enough to use these guns. Make sure they know not to stick the end of the gun in their mouth because bullets come out fast. Oh yeah, and for all the Californians, make sure that when a person cuts you off on the highway, you don't get the urge to say, "Are you feeling lucky?" I guess what I'm trying to say is that guns are OK in the right hands, and that's not meant as a crack to all you lefties out there. When we give a gun to any moron out there, then we have a problem. ? ____ I e a far cry Morrison was fascinated with sion where chaos and distortion.
