Record USC nip By MELISSA WINGATE Staff Writer Tradition and rivalry make for big games, no matter what the odds, and Saturday night's 141st meeting between USC and Clemson was no exception. The down-and-out Tigers gave the favored Gamecocks a scare in the last five minutes of the game, but USC kept their poise and pulled out a 58-53 victory on late free throws by junior guards Jo Jo English and Barry Manning. Clemson. now 9-11 overall and 0-7 in the ACC, forced the Gamecocks out of their game plan for the majority of the match, keeping things slower than the up-tempo pace USC had expected. Senior guard Donnell Bruce led the Tigers, scoring 23 points on 8 of 10 shooting from the field. Bruce started for Clemson after putting in a good performance in a loss this past week to ACC rival North Carolina. The Garnn~ocks were led by English's 15 points and center Jeff Roulston's game-high nine rebour is.
