time since Always in Once Around 1
as Sam Sharpe and Renata Bella. 1
Given both actors' strong perfor- 1
mances in past projects, I had high
hopes for Once Around, but their
performances are lacking the usual
fire both actors normally bring to
their roles.
The story centers around Renata,
her family and her inability to
grow up. She had always been in
the shadow of her father, never
having a reason to make her own
decisions. After she is dumped by
her boyfriend, Renata goes to St.
Martin's in the Carribean to sell
condos. Here she meets Sam
Sharpe, and they fall in love at
first sight
Sam is kind, caring and eccentric
but obnoxious. This is
where the conflict arises. Sam is a
salesman and is good at it. He
likes being in control of situations.
When he enters Renata's close-knit
family, led by patriarch Joe

[Danny Aiello), his personality irritates
the family. At this point,
foe feels threatened by Sam's flattery
and generous personality bemuse
he fears Sam is trying to
move in on his power over the
family.
There are several plot twists
which keep the story interesting.
The foremost of these twists is Renata's
struggle with herself. What
it boils down to is that Renata
must choose between Sam or her
family and ultimately whether or
not to stay a child.
The film has some hearttouching
moments and some comical
moments, but they really don't
make up for the long, drawn-out
sequences which seem out of
place.
Richard Dreyfuss is one of the
most versatile actors in the business,
acting in comedies and dramas.
Dreyfuss is best known for
his collaborations with Steven
Spielberg such as Jaws, Close Encounters
of the Third Kind and
Always.

The Trustus theater's presentation
of Fences Friday was incredible.
From the acting to the music
to the set, the entire company did a
great job with this play.
Bernard Addison's performance
1 in the lead role was unbelievable.
Addison was very convincing as
Troy Maxson, a black garbageman
trying to cut the world down
into a size he can manage. One
would think Addison also was
thrown to the world at age 14 with

occuring on weekends, the only
i time Troy has a drink and really
( talks to his wife and family.
[ The plot centers around Troy's
relationship with his son, Corey,
and his wife, Rose. Troy is torn
throughout the play by conflicts
within his complex personality, in
the uniqueness within himslef. He
seems to have a stubborn inborn
force driving him to be ruthless
and domineering as his father was,
but he also has a strong comical
side and a beautiful originality about
him. Again, Addison knows
this character and plays the role to
the hilt.
The other members of the cast
also did a tremendous job with
their roles. Michael Burgess must
, remember exactly what it's like to
be a teenager. He evokes all the
embarrassed, hurt and excited feelings
of a boy at this age very well
as the character tried to live in his
father's ominous shadow.

Burgess' character, Corey, is a
alented athlete like Troy, a baseball
player; but, unlike his father,

The character Rose, Troy's bigboned,
devoted wife, was excellently
portrayed by Jocelyn Sanders.
While her character has some
of the most poignant lines of the
play, she did not hog the stage, but
instead made her presence a
strong, underlying force, just as
Rose was in Troy's life.
It is Rose who tells Troy his life
is not the ultimate baseball game
he thinks it is. When he tries to tell
her he has to cheat on her to get
the extra energy to make it to
home base, she tells him she's
been standing nght beside him on
first base for 18 years ? he has no
excuse.
But because Troy is such a complex
character, one leaves the play
wondering if Troy's extremely
harsh early life of picking cotton,
stealing, killing and serving a
prison term excuses him from the
relatively minor crimes he inflicts
on Rose, Corey and his brother
Gabriel.
At the end of the play, it is Gabriel
who makes the audience
think about Troy's past, present
and future. Gabriel's role in the
play is effectively surreal throughout
the play. He "had half his head
blown away in the war" and hasn't
been right since, Troy says of his
brother, to whom he is very devoted.
Gabriel carries a horn
looped to his pants (like a wellknown
angel) and sings "the judgment
is a-comin'" as he enters his
scenes selling fruit to Rose.
August Wilson's Fences is a
great play, and the Trustus theater
company did it justice.
