USC English professor John
MacNicholas wrote the script for
Booth, a play which will world
premiere at Drayton Hall
Thursday.
Booth deals with the trials and
tribulations of actor Edwin Booth
after his brother, John Wilkes
Booth, assassinated President
Abraham Lincoln. "Torn between
the great love for his
brother, Edwin Booth was a supporter
of the Union and felt profound
shame for John's act,"
MacNicholas said. "This story is
about moral heroism."
The American history most
students learn in high school
does not include" the differences
within the Booth family. "Edwin
has been ignored. We all learn
that John was an actor, but what
we don't get is that Edwin and
his father, Junius, were great actors.
Edwin was a genius, the
best produced actor from the United
States in that era," MacNicholas
said.
'The Booths were so wonderful
that everyone came to see the
Booths perform. Lincoln would
not go to a play if they were not
performing," MacNicholas said.
Though Lincoln did love the
Booths, he was slayed by one of
the only non-supporters of the
Union in the family.
Director Kevin Kelly, who has
the direction of more than '100
plays to his credit, said, "It's a
good idea because Edwin was
the leading classical actor. It's
amazing how the family has experienced
both good fortune and
bad fortune."
Theater arts senior Hunter
Boyle will be playing the role of
William Stewart, owner of the
Winter Garden Theatre, the place
where the reality scenes of the
play take place. "He is very good
at what he does, he is an actor's

In the News: Yet another heavy c
metal band is in the center of con- j
troversy. This time it's AC/DC, s
and the charges aren't obscenity or 4
incitement to suicide. Three people t
were killed in a stage rush during p
one of the group's packed concerts t
in California, and critics are out- (
raged that the band continued its c
show. Spokesmen for AC/DC said v
after a short conference with the a
venue's officials, it was decided to 1
continue the show in order to pre- a
vent a possible riot. y
Both Anthrax and Billy Idol <
and his band were thrown out of
their London hotel after the musicians
apparently caused a brawl in ,
the hotel's bar. According to a
spokesman for Anthrax, the conflict
supposedly started after a
male patron walked up to idol ana
gave him an unexpected kiss on
the lips. After the kiss, a member
of Idol's band hit the fan over the ,
head with a bottle, and Idol proceeded
to get into a fist fight with
the man. The festivities quickly escalated
into an all-out barroom
brawl.
On the home front: After 13
years together, and two children,
Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall finally
married in November. However,
the legality of the ceremony
has been widely questioned. Meanwhile,
bandmate Bill Wyman has
filed for judicial separation from
his young (and some have said too
young) bride, 17-year-old Mandy
Smith. Rod Stewart and girlfriend,
21-year-old model Rachel
Hunter, were married in front of
250 guests in a Beverly Hills ceremony.
Nenah Cherry married her
longtime partner Cameron McVey
in early December. McVey is the
father of Cherry's second child.
After 10 years of marriage, Eddie
Van Halen and Valerie Bertinelli
are exDecting their first child
sometime this month.
Amidst talk of a break-up after
the departure of drummer Chris
Mars, The Replacements have taken
on Steve Foley as their new
drummer. Whether Foley will become
permanant to the line-up has
not yet been decided.
Charges have been dropped
against Axl Rose concerning an indicent
with a female neighbor, in ?
which he allegedly hit her over the 1
head with a wine bottle. Rose has ?
repeatedly stated the woman is an *
obsessed fan, and is still seeking a ^
restraining order against her. The *

Rolling Stones guitarist Ron
Wood suffered two broken legs after
a car accident. Wood's wife
was driving the couple's BMW
when it crashed. No one was injured,
but when Wood stepped out
to direct traffic around the car, he
was struck by another car, shattering
both of his legs. Two other
cars then struck Wood's car, leaving
his wife and two children with
minor injuries. After a week's stay
in an English hospital, Wood has
been recuperating at home, outfitted
with casts and cruches, and is
reportedly doing fine.
Meanwhile, David Crosby
broke his left leg, ankle and shoulder
when the throttle of his
Harley-Davidson became stuck as
the singer hit a curve, sending him
into a 40-foot skid. After nine days
of recovery in two California hospitals,
Crosby was released and
was bedridden at his home. Within
a month of his release, Crosby was
resuming limited activity. He was
