Beauty pageants often conjure up images o
sculpted beauties, their faces loaded with heavj
makeup, who strive to look perfect all the time
Upon meeting Miss South Carolina-USA, 20
year-old Columbia resident and USC studen
Traci Rufty, that assembly-line image is quickly
eradicated.
Her straight, sandy blond hair, hazel eyes
fair but distinct complexion and firm, propor
tioned body accent Rufty's natural good looks
To exemplify her tendency for the natural, sh(
revealed, "I had to go out and buy makeup for mj
last pageant Up to that point, I didn't wear any.'
Make no mistake however. This formei
tomboy, who as a teen rode motorcycles anc
horses, has shed that integument in favor of i
bathing suit and an evening gown for the upcom
ing Miss USA pageant
A virtual unknown to beauty pageants, Ruftj
burst upon the pageant scene by winning the title
of Miss South Carolina this past December. With
that victory, Rufty will now compete in the Miss
USA pageant Feb. 22 in Wichita, Kan. Should
she win, she will head west to Los Angeles for a
year full of travel, leaving her with little time for
family and friends. She would then spend hei
time preparing for an opportunity to win the

When asked what inspired her to enter \

events. Although her current schedule pre?g
eludes her from student life now, she plans on
that returning to USC for eight-week courses after the
g to pageant.
Rufty will be very conspicuous in the upcomrant

s of Intellectually, Rufty is someone who holds
lain strong conviction in her views on the world. She
defends a woman's right to choose on the topic of
"N. abortion, and shrugs off the often-heard sentiments
that pageants are degrading to women. She
treasons, "No one forced me to enter beauty

\ She supports the efforts of the president

\ The most striking fact of Rufty's
I character is that she does no act the
role of beauty queen. "I'm ref

What I'm writing today conms
the little idiosyncracies that

Question 1: WHY DO WOMEN
OPEND SO MUCH TIME AND
slERGY ON BODY PARTS
ALES LOOK AT THE LEAST?
lis question generally concerns
mails. Now males take general
re of toenails, clipping them
len they get longer than their
oes or turn the color of their
vn, yet females cut, file, and
int theirs every color of the rainw.
If this is for basic hygiene,
ol, but girls, no guy in the world
s ever uttered, "Whoa, check out
i toenails on that babe."
Question 2: WHY DO GIRLS
WE SO MANY CLOTHES?
ilks, everytime I visit my best

pooch in a divorce settlement,
ary Sue Treefrog, she always

fWstinn V WHY DO HTRT .S

YOU CALL THEM SO

Well, I have more questions
