Lady Game
to Virginia
By STEVE JOHNSON
Sports Editor
In a disappointing road loss in
Blacksburg, Va., the Lady Gamecocks
(11-4) were upset by Metro
rival Virginia Tech (5-9) by a
score of 69-67. The loss for USC
is the lone blemish on an otherwise
untarnished Metro Conference
record (3-1). The Lady Hokies
improved their Metro record
to 3-2.
Senior guard Jeni Garber paced
the Lady Hokies with 16 points,
and junior guard/forward Dayna
Sonovick added 15 points, including
Virginia Tech's final points at
:25 remaining in the game.
Sophomore center Marsha Williams
topped her per game average
of 16.2 points by scoring 22 in the
loss. Williams' contribution led the
Lady Gamecocks for the day and
solidified her place among the
Metro's leading scorers. Williams
was the sixth-leading scorer in the
league entering Saturday's contest
USC led Virginia Tech 33-25
with 5:25 remaining in the first
half. Then the Lady Hokies struck
back.
The Hokies responded by scoring
the next eight points of the half
to tie the score at halftime, 33-33.

The score was last tied with 10:05

Virginia Tech then scored 10
points during a stretch in which
USC could only muster one basket.
After falling behind by the
widest margin in the game, the
Lady Gamecocks regrouped and
managed to shave the Lady Hokies'
lead to just three points with

4:00 left in the game.
Sonovick retaliated for Virginia
Tech by scoring the next six points
to push the Lady Hokies on top for
good with :25 remaining.
USC countered with three shots
from the charity stripe and a tip-in
with :02 to close the scoring in the
game and bring the final score to
69-67.
The Lady Gamecocks have a
chance to redeem themselves tonight
as they take on the Florida
State Lady Seminoles at 7:00 p.m.
at Carolina Coliseum.
The Lady Seminoles' attack features
the leading scorer in the
Metro, senior guard Wanda Burns.
Burns, who is averaging 19.5
points per game, will provide one
of the toughest challenges of the
season for either USC senior guard
Karen Middleton or junior guard
Lori Joyner.
Most likely Middleton or Joyner
will draw the assignment of trying
to contain the explosive shooting
of Burns. In addition to scoring
from the field, Burns is also the
seventh-leading free throw shooter
at 77.6 percent and ranks fourth in
assists with 4.3 apg in the Metro.
If the Lady Gamecocks should
concern themselves too much with
containing Burns, the Lady Seminoles
will exploit a multiplecoverage
defensive scheme by
dumping the ball off to one of
their other chief scorers: sophomore
forward Chantelle Dishman.
Dishman has connected on 66.4
percent of her field goals and aver.
ages 17.8 points per game.

Bills clain
as Raiders
By The Associated Press
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)
? The Buffalo Bills had the nohuddle
and the Los Angeles Raiders
had no chance.
The Bills, seemingly unable to
wait to get to Tampa for their first
Super Bowl, didn't huddle, didn't
try to eat up the clock and didn't
take one step backward Sunday in
a record-setting 51-3 rout of the
Los Angeles Raiders for the AFC
Championship.
The Bills (15-3) used an awesome
array of offensive precision
and defensive power in running up
the most points in an AFL or NFL
playoff game since the San Diego
Chargers beat the Boston Patriots
51-10 in 1964. They overwhelmed
the Raiders from the beginning,
scoring a record 41 points in the
First half, operating almost exclusively
from the no-huddle attack
and the shotgun.
Thurman Thomas ran over, around
and through the befuddled
Raiders as the Bills piled up 503
total yards.
Thomas showed exactly why he
led the NFL in total yardage with
170 yards in the opening half. He
finished with 138 rushing, five rer

the second touchdown on a

Bills's line opened a massive hole.
The only time Thomas wasn't
doing damage to the usually
staunch LA defense was when
Kenneth Davis was running in for
scores of 1 and 3 yards. Or when 1
James Lofton, cut by the Raiders
in 1989, was catching TD passes '
of 13 and 8 yards from Jim Kelly,
who wound up 17-of-23 for 300
yards. 1

lose 51 -3
The Bills' other score in the
opening half, when they surpassed
the record 38 points scored, by
Washington against the Rams in
1983, came on Darryl Talley's
27-yard interception return.
Davis also had a 1-yard TD run
in the fourth quarter.
It was the Bills' first championship
since winning the AFL title in
1965, the year before the first
Super Bowl. They lost in the 1966
and 1988 conference championship
games.
The Raiders (12-5) lost at Rich
Stadium 38-24 in the regular season
when Buffalo scored 24 points
in the fourth quarter. This time, in
their first AFC title game since the
'83 season, the Raiders were out of
it in the second quarter.
Raiders quarterback Jay
Schroeder's was 8-for-20 for 100
yards with two interceptions in the
decisive first half. He also began
the second half by throwing two
more interceptions, and finished
just 13 of 31 for 150 yards.
The five interceptions tied the
AFC playoff record by the Houston
Oilers' Dan Pastorini against
the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1979 and
by the New York Jets' Richard
Todd against the Miami Dolphins
in 1983.
The Bills intercepted a sixth
pass, off backup quarterback Vince
Evans, in the fading moments of
the fourth quarter ? the most by
one team since the ALL and NrL
merger. The all-time record is
eight by the Chicago Bears in their
73-0 victory over the Washington
Redskins for the 1940 NFL
championship.
