Two administrators get achievement awards
Two USC administrators have been honored by the National Associ
ation for Student Personnel Administrators.

received the Bob E. Leach Award for Outstanding Service to Students
The award recognizes administrators who show a sincere concern for
and commitment to, students and fostering student development.
Patti Tomanio, assistant dean for student life, received the Willian
Leftwich Award for Outstanding New Professional in NASPA Regior
III, which includes the area from Virginia to Texas. Tomanio wa<
selected on the basis of her contributions to NASPA and USC.
Assistant dean in business to receive award
William Kettinger, assistant dean for information and technology resources
at USC's College of Business Administration, has been named
1990 Cause/Effect Contributor of the Year.
Cause/Effect is the quarterly magazine of Cause, the association for
the management of information technology in higher education. Kettinger
was honored at a luncheon Thursday at the Cause National Conference
in Miami Beach, Fla.
Kettinger's award-winning article, "The Decentralization of
Academic Computing: Defining Future Roles," examines the changing
role of a central computing facility on campus. The article appeared in
the fall 1990 issue of Cause/Effect.
The award is sponsored by Systems and Computer Technology
Corp., a Cause corporate member specializing in applications software
and computing management services for higher education.
Kettinger is responsible for managing the business college's James
C. Self Computer Center, the Springs Business Library, the Center for
Academic Computing, and the Sony Video and Graphics Laboratory.
USC co-sponsoring "Tie One On" campaign
The second annual "Let's Change the Meaning of Tie One On" campaign
against drunk driving got under way Monday and will continue
through the holiday season. v
Sponsored by USC, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Governor's
Office on Highway Safety, the campaign calls for drivers to tie a
red ribbon to the left door handle, outside rear-view mirror or antenna
of their cars in a wish for a less violent holiday season.
Ribbons will be displayed and distributed by USC's Office of Alcohol
and Drug Programs and campus organizations.
USC faculty and staff received ribbons with their paychecks Friday.

NAACP chapter wins awards at conference
The USC chapter of the NAACP has won the College Chapter of the
Year Award from the S.C. State Conference of Branches for the third
consecutive year.
Two USC students also have received awards from the state branch
oi uie jNAAtr. Mepnen Benjamin, student government president, received
the Modjeska Simpkins Civil Rights Award, and chapter president
Troy Brockington received the 1990 NAACP College Student ol
the Year Award.
The NAACP chapter also has been recognized for its membership
drive. The chapter won first place in Membership Laydown (242 new
members in a 90-day period) and second place for Overall Membership
(579 members).
