use defeats UNC, Hou; By DOUG AUBE Sports Editor CHARLOTTE ? There has been much talk about the so-called "chicken curse" concerning the failures of USC's athletic teams. Well, this past weekend at the Tournament of Champions in Charlotte the Gamecocks reversed the curse with wins over the fourth-ranked University of North Carolina Tar Heels and a previously undefeated Houston Cougar squad to win the tournament title. "Maybe it will send a message across the country that South Carolina is inching its way back," USC Coach George Felton said. In Friday night's matchup with UNC, the First game between the teams in eighteen years, USC forward Michael Glover banked in a layup with seven seconds to play to lift the 'Cocks to the upset victory, 76-74. "It means a lot to me," Glover said. "I try my best to do what I can with leadership and scoring. This win means a lot to me. I'll remember it for the rest of my life." The way the first half ended, Glover's memories of the game looked as they would be a bit less memorable as the Tar Heels' defense forced 17 Gamecock turnovers and limited USC to a 39.4 shooting percentage on their way to a 40-28 lead. "Our defense in the first half was outstanding," UNC coach Dean Smith said. "We should have been up 20 to 25 at the half with the opportunities we had." After UNC's Hubert Davis driving layup gave the host team a 44-30 lead with 18:46 to play, the Gamecocks scored 10 straight points, six by tournament Most Valuable Player Joe Rhett, to cut the gap to 44-40 with 13:26 to play. The gap stayed between three and five points up to the 10 minute mark until USC guard Jo Jo English scored on a driving layup following a Rhett dunk to slice the Tar Heel lead to one. UNC was able to gain control of the momentum building a five point lead with 5:23 to play. English canned a 20-foot three-pointer and followed that up with two free throws, to give him 11 second half points, and the game was tied at 64. The Tar Heels went on an 8-4 run and following George Lynch's layup, were up 72-68. Rhett hit one of two free throws and Barry Manning canned a three pointer to lift the Gamecocks into a 72-72 tie with :49 to play. USC's Chris Leso scored on a key layup after UNC's Davis hit two free throws and the game was tied again with 21 seconds left in the contest, just enough time for Glover's last-second heroics. USC sprinted down court on a three on one break. Glover passed to Rhett and then got the ball back in the paint and laid in the ball to the dismay of a large part of the 22,680 fans on hand. The rest was history as the Gamecocks renewed the rivalry in a big way. "I want to congratulate South Carolina on a marvelously played second half," Smith said. "I went in and told them (USC) that. They kept coming back, believing they could win, and they did." One of USC's biggest wins ever was put in proper perspective by Felton as their mission was not quite finished. "We want to enjoy this win for now, but we came up here to win the tournament and we have another tough game in less than 24 hours," Felton said in reference to the Finals matchup with the Cougars. In a game that could have been easily lost in the emotion of the UNC win, the Gamecocks jumped out to an early 17-4 lead after hitting nine of their first 15 shots. The 'Cocks held on for a 32-26 lead at the half over Houston in Saturday night's Final. The Cougars stormed back in the contest in the second half, taking |l IP"* CAROLINA PROGRAM UNIOf H THE SPPNCf | WAGTC AWP \IV y 3h| Tueeala^; 0cornier 4 ft # <?<? pm at tic (fotfJen Spur HH n I I >ji? y Free with Student ID & 8 This Program paid for, in part, by student a< n jjjj y For More Information, Call 777-7130 ^oS.?jl??!5iwfe?fe#?S!.?!i!?fe,5Special Programs Commit LOOKING FOR A WAY TO EARN AN EXTRA $120 A MONTH??? Houston's Roger Fernandes canned a tres to tie the game at 66 at the end of regulation. The 6-foot-9-inch forward hit four of five three-point attempts in the contest. The Gamecocks held their composure and outscored the Cougars 8-4 in the over-time period capped off with an English breakaway dunk with 3.6 seconds to play. Freshman Jamie Watson followed Rhett's miss with 22 seconds to play preceding the English dunk as the Gamecocks won 74-70. Rhett was named the tournament's MVP and Manning also made the All-Tournament team. Gamecock center Jeff Roulston played well in the post with 15 points (11 in the second half), seven rebounds and four blocked shots and more importantly held Houston's 7-foot-l-inch center Alvaro Teheran to 14 points after he had scored 32 against Iowa State Friday night. For USC, the victory lifted the team to 4-1 on the season and a probable top twenty ranking. Nothing like a few big wins to remedy the old chicken curse.
