The Lady Gamecocks defeated the Lady Red

The USC football team used 16 1
second half points in front of an
ESPN television audience and a
Thanksgiving night crowd of
64,251 at Williams-Brice Stadium
to top West Virginia 29-10. <
The Mountaineers took the i

yards, capped off by a Mark Johnson
30-yard field goal. i
USC senior Mike Dingle carried ?
the ball 12 times in the Gamecocks'
first drive, including a a
one-yard touchdown plunge to
give USC the 7-3 lead.
. West Virginia drove again on
their next possession and, on the
first play of the second quarter,
running back Jon Jones ran around
the right side for a nine-yard
touchdown to regain the lead for
the Mountaineers at 10-7.
USC again answered with a 10
play, 58-yard drive, topped off by
Collin Mackie's first of a schoolrecord
five field goals he would
have in the contest
Near ther end of the half,
Mackie booted a 24-yard field goal
to finish a 72-yard drive which
gave USC a 13-10 lead at the
break.
Early in the second half, Dingle
was injured and freshman Rob DeBoer
was brought in. The Omaha,
Neb. native carried the ball eight
times in USC's opening drive of
the half and scored on a two yard
dive to increase the Gamecock
lead to 20-10.
The USC defense halted two
West Virginia drives and the
Gamecocks got Mackie's third
field goal, from 36 yards out, at
the start of the fourth quarter.
The teams again exchanged
short drives and with 9:40 left in
the game, quarterback Bobby
Fuller hit receiver Eddie Miller for
a 23-yard gain. Four plays later,
Mackie tied the school record for
field goals in a game with a
27-yard boot and a 26-10 lead.
On the Mountaineers first play
after the kickoff, Jones' pass was
picked off by USC linebacker Joe
Reaves. The USC offense drove 21

hires USC coach
Trevor Adair, an assistant soccer
:oach at USC for the past eight
seasons, has been named head soc:er
coach at Brown University. He

coach of the Bears.
Adair, 30, a native of Belfast, N.
Ireland, has had a successful assistant
coaching career at USC since
1982, playing a key role in the
success of the Gamecock soccer
program. Since 1985, the Gamecocks
have qualified for the
NCAA tournament each year,
earning a berth into the Final Four
in 1988, and twice going as far as
the quarterfinal round (1989 and
1985). He also coached two Adidas
Goalkeepers of the Year at
USC.
"I'm proud to be coming to such
a great school as Brown with a national
reputation for academics,"
Adair said. "I'm ready to accept
the challenge of turning the Brown
soccer program around and competing
in the Ivy League against
some of the top teams in the region.
I was given a lot of responsibility
at South Carolina, and I
know recruiting and what it takes
to get the job done."
Adair has also worked as a state ,
coach in the SCYSA Olympic Development
Program, the head
coach of the South Carolina
Olympic Development State Team
and the head coach of the Lock ;
Haven University Club soccer
team.
A 1982 graduate of i^ock Haven
University with a bachelor's degree
in economics, Adair was a
1980 Ail-American and four-year
All-East selection. He led Lock
Haven to two national champion
ships as a player, the 1978 NCAA
Division III Championship and the
NCAA Division II National
Championship in 1980. He earned *
a master's degree in physical edu
cation from USC in 1989.
