Some athletic teams have the
luxury of being able to get out
their schedules in the pre-season,
point out one game and say,
"That's our season. If we win that
game, we're successful; if we
don't, we're not"
For Notre Dame, it's Miami. For
mraue, u s inaiana. for tne in.y.
Giants, it's the San Francisco
49ers.
And for USC this basketball
season, it's North Carolina.
If you haven't circled Nov. 30
on your calendar yet, do it now.
Tie a string around your finger,
come up with some mnemonic device
or staple a note to your forehead.
Just don't forget that date.
; You can't forget it because it's
the date of what might be the most
important game in the history of
Carolina basketball.
No, that is not an exaggeration.
This program has been painstakingly
rebuilt by Bill Foster and
George Felton over the past decade,
and the North Carolina game
will serve as a litmus test determining
just how far it has come or
how far it has to go.
This program is teetering on the
brink of greatness. A win, or more
importantly, a good showing
against North Carolina, and Felton's
group could get over the
hump. A blowout, and people will
look at us like they did when N.C.
State shellacked us in the first
round of the NCAAs two years

The ACC championship USC
won in 1971 signaled the apex of
South Carolina basketball. Then
Frank McGuire left in 1980,
George Rogers won the Heisman
Trophy and everyone seemed to
forget this school had a basketball
program.
George Felton has brought this
program as close as it has ever
come to reliving the glory days of
Carolina basketball. With a win, or

team, and I believe all four arc realistic.
They should 1) make a serious
run at the Metro Conference
championship, 2) get into the Top
25 and stay there, 3) get back into
the NCAAs, and 4)try to beat
North Carolina. The North Carolina
game is the key. g
And it can be won. I don't like
the cynicism I've been hearing about
the North Carolina game.
Everyone is talking about Eric
Montross. He's a freshman, folks,
and our game is very early in the
season.
Go ahead, take for granted that
the Tar Heels will dominate the inside
matchups. But you've got to
give us the guards. Barry Manning
and Jo Jo English can hang with
anyone in the country, including
the overrated pair of King Rice C
and Rick Fox. /
Dec. 20, 1988, is probably the v
date Felton best remembers in his
tenure as USC head coach. On that |
night in Carolina Coliseum, the
Gamecocks whipped a nationally
ranked Ohio State team 74-68 on
ESPN.
That was the high point of the ?
season. After every loss from then .
on, Felton would say, "We need to '
get back to where we were aginst
Ohio State." And after every big |
win it was, "I feel we're back to
where we were against Ohio J
State."
If USC beats North Carolina,

Felton leads

As George Felton enters his fifth
season as USC's head basketball
coach, the Gamecock cagers will
again attempt to capture the Metro
Conference crown. It will be the
team's final opportunity to win the
league title, as Southeastern Conference
play begins next year.
"We're very excited about the
upcoming season," Felton said. "It
is nnr final innrnev in the Metro.
and we'd like to make it special. It
would be very nice to win the
tournament. But before you look
that far ahead, you have to take
one game at a time."
Felton expects the Metro race to
be tight because the talent is
spread throughout the conference's
eight teams.
"We're looking to be very competitive
in the Metro this year,"
Felton said. "I think the Metro is
going to be well-balanced, similar
to two years ago when four teams
went to the NCAA tournament
"We play a tough schedule this
year, including North Carolina for
the first time in 18 years. I feel the
schedule will be exciting for our
entire program and fans here in
South Carolina. Our team represents
experience and depth at certain

Last season's squad was beset
by injuries and academic troubles
but still managed to post a 14-14
record. With all but one player
back from a year ago, last year's
adversity should make the Gamecocks
a closer and better team.
"I feel like the most important
thing about a basketball team is its
chemistry," Felton said. "Anytime
you have a team that has gone
through as much as we have, usually
the kids will come together. I
think there is probably a unique
bond with this group, and I hope
that bond will lead to exciting
things for all of us."
Felton and his coaching staff are
close to the players, which factors
heavily into the team's success.
"The success of the program
over the last four years is based on
the communication between my
coaching staff and the players. I
think the kids understand that my
biggest thing is the three C's: confidence,
competence and caring. I
think the last C, caring, is a big
part of our program's success."
With Felton providing leadership
to the family-type atmosphere,
the Gamecocks look to overcome a
tough schedule and bring home
their first title in their last season
of Metro Conference play.
