6Key plays' By STEVE JOHSON Staff Writer The Gamecocks halted a three game losing streak in front of a sparse home crowd of 52,812 by pounding the Southern Illinois Salukis with a score of 38-13. The first of many key plays came in the second drive of the second quarter, with the score tied at seven. After a nine-yard run by USC runningback Rob DeBoer set up a first down on their own 46-yard line, quarterback Bobby Fuller decided to go deep. A pass to wide receiver Robert Brooks was tipped by SIU cornerback J. J. Chaney at the 10-yard line, but it was held aloft momentarily as Chaney fell to the ground. Brooks hauled the tipped pass-in and ran into the end zone to cap off a 54-yard pass play. Brooks caught two other passes for the day, one more for a touchdown early in the second half, enroute to being named the player of the game. Brooks responded to the game and the crowd turnout by stating, "I'm just happy for the fans that did come. Backup quarterback Wright Mitchell entered the game with 5:27 remaining and had a 10-yard run on a fourth and eight from the SIU 32-yard line. A late hit on Mitchell brought the ball even closer to the end zone, which USC would find again two plays later. Freshman receiver Mario Henry fought off a defender and managed to keep one foot in bounds to catch a nine-yard scoring pass from Mitchell. SIU punter David Peters punted the ball to USC, where they took over on their own 45-yard line. With only 1:02 remaining in the game, USC needed only to snap the ball to Mitchell a couple of times to run out the clock and wrap up the victory. The junior had four catch Volleyball tea By PATRICK VILLEGAS Staff Writer The Lady Gamecocks volleyball team prepared themselves for the upcoming Metro Conference tournament by sweeping all three of its matches over the weekend in the third annual Gamecock Invitational. The Gamecocks finished regular season play with a 23-13 record with wins over AlabamaBirmingham and North Carolina Friday and Rutgers on Saturday. The Lady Gamecocks won all three matches with three-to-one scores defeating Rutgers 15-4, 6-15, 15-9 and 15-12 Saturday. Coach Bonnie Kenny said the invitational greatly prepared Carolina for this weekend's Metro Conference tournament in Louisville, Ky. "I think we are ready," Kenny said. Kenny said the youth and the team chemistry has blended to form a good team, and she believes the attitude of the team has carried its success. "We are having more fun working hard. It's not such a chore to play real hard," she said. In the first half of the season, the Gamecocks, with three starting freshmen and a rough schedule, struggled to maintain a .500 average, but Kenny said the players have now matured and gained the experience to win. "It's hard when you start three freshman and expect them to be able to play," Kenny said. We had a tough schedule in the beginning and the end, and I think it really paid off. Although it has been a while since they have defeated the Bearcats, Kenny said the team is due for a win. "I think we match up real well against them, and if we can play back-court defense like we've been playing in the last couple matches, we'll do OK." Kenny is pleased and excited with the 1990 squad. People are understanding their roles better and are performing in great strides, she said. "It's been wonderful," Kenny said. "I wouldn't trade this group for any of them.
