USC to face 1
teams look to
By STEVE JOHNSON
Staff Writer
After suffering a crushing 41-10
setback to bowl-bound Florida
State, Coach Sparky Woods said
the Gamecocks are looking to "get
under control and find a way to
win a ballgame."
USC will have an opportunity to
do that Saturday at 1:30 D.m. when
they take on the Southern Illinois
University Salukis at WilliamsBrice
Stadium.
According to SIU head coach
Bob Smith, the Division 1-AA Salukis
(2-8) are a "young, inexperienced
team." Although they are in
the middle of a seven-game losing
streak, the beginning of that slide
was marked by a game against nationally
ranked Illinois in which
they went on top of the Illini early
by a score of 21-7. The Salukis
went on to lose 56-21, but proved
that they can score against a Division
One team.
The major concern for the Salukis
this Saturday will be trying to
rnmp nn with a wav to contain the
. Gamecocks' prolific passer, quarterback
Bobby Fuller. With three
games left to play, Fuller has already
thrown 127 passes for 1,742
yards and 11 touchdowns. Fuller is

featuring four down lineman
and a zone coverage. Applying

kis will be linebackers Kevin Kilgallon,
Brian Miller, Jon Manley
and defensive end Marty Hochertz.
The four Saluki defenders have
combined for 284 tackles and seven
quarterback sacks.
Offensively, the Salukis feature
a pass-oriented attack led by junior
transfer quarterback Brian Downey.
Downey has thrown 173 passes
for 1,853 yards and six touchdowns
this season. Primary targets
for Downey are the sophomore receiving
tandem of Johnny Roots
and Justin Roebuck. "R & R" have
caught a total of 59 passes for 884
yards and two touchdowns.
The matchup between USC and
Southern Illinois is the first game
between the two teams and probably
will not be the beginning of a
rivalry. This is because the Gamecocks
will be dropping many of
the Division 1-AA schools from its
schedule in an effort to accomodate
the schedule changes that will
take place as a result of USC's
new SEC membership.
