After his recovery, he began working as an exit-counselor, a person who helps others leave cult groups. Hassan has spoken all over the country on cults and the power they possess. He has lectured at many universities including Yale, Boston and Johns Hopkins. He has also been on many radio and television shows such as the Today Show. In his lectures, Hassan discusses the belief most people have that, "It'll never happen to me." He warns that being lured into a cult can happen to anyone. 'They are likely to seek out new members during particularly stressful periods: during finals week, freshmen during orientation week and uncertain seniors about to graduate," h e said. ; Hassan's lecture will be sponsored by the Carolina Program Union.
