Staff Writer .
The Florida State Seminoles
scalped USC 41-10 Saturday afternoon,
handing the struggling
Gamecocks their third consecutive
defeat.
The Gamecocks were able to
cross midfield only once in the
first three quarters, and trailed
34-3 entering the fourth quarter.
By the time Carolina scored their
only touchdown with 1:26 left in
the game, the majority of the
Williams-Brice Stadium crowd of
71,438 had departed.
Coach Sparky Woods lauded
FSU's play, while again expressing
disappointment with the Gamecocks'
performance.
"Florida State has an excellent
football team," he said. "They won
every phase of the game. They
have excellent weapons at every
position and were dominant at the
line of scrimmage. Field position
obviously hurt us throughout the
game. This is a very disappointing
loss.
"I thought we were ready to
play," Woods said. "We practiced
hard all week, and the intensity
was there before the game. The defense
made some tackles that they
didn't (make) two weeks ago, although
we still missed a lot of
tackles. In the second half, they
just knocked us off the ball."
USC wasted several early op
portunities. On the game's first
play from scrimmage, FSU quarterback
Casey Weldon attempted a
pass that landed-in USC cornerback
Antonio Walker's hands.
Walker was unable to hold onto
the ball, and the Seminoles retained
possession.
Carolina took over after forcing
an FSU punt but gave the ball
back to the Seminoles when quarterback
Bobby Fuller was intercepted
by FSU comerback Terrell
Buckley.
Walker had another chance to
make a key interception when, on
second and one from the USC
21-yard line, Weldon threw the
ball into the right flat. Walker
stepped in front of the intended receiver
and had nothing but open
field between him and the goal
line. But once again, he dropped
the ball.
]
"On the two missed intercep- <
tions, I just took my eyes off the I
ball and started running before I ]
caught them," Walker said. 'Those 1
could have turned the game ar- <
ound. I just counted the chickens 1
before they hatched."

Five plays later, FSU running
back Amp Lee scored the first of
his three touchdowns, this one
from five yards out. Richie Andrews'
kick made the score 7-0
with 10:19 left in the first quarter.
On FSU's first possesion of the
second quarter, Lee scored again,
this time on an 11-yard run. The
Seminoles led 14-0 with 12:47 remaining
in the first half. After a
USC punt, FSU moved to the USC
26. On fourth and 18, Andrews
booted a 43-yard field goal, leaving
the Gamecocks on the short
end of a 17-0 score.
USC took the ensuing kickoff
and drove from their own 20 to the
FSU nine-yard line. But on second
and seven, Fuller was sacked for a
seven-yard loss. Facing third and
14 on the FSU 16, Fuller overthrew
a wide open Robert Brooks
in the end zone.
Collin Mackie came in and
kicked a 33-yard field goal on the
next play to pull Carolina within
17-3 with four minutes remaining
in the second quarter.
USC got the ball back after an
FSU punt but was unable to move
downfield. On fourth and 25 from
their own 15, USC was forced to
punt Daren Parker's punt was partially
blocked, giving FSU the ball
at the USC 32-yard line with 1:15
remaining before halftime.

penalty called against them on first

on the good field position as Andrews
kicked a 42-yard field goal
at the :33 mark, giving FSU a 20-3
halftime lead.
The second half was more of the
same. On their first possession,
FSU drove 66 yards in 10 plays
for a score, with Lee running in
from 13 yards out at the 8:28
mark. Lee, who rushed for 94
yards on 15 carries, was through
for the day. Unfortunately for the
Gamecocks, FSU wasn't.
Lee's backup at tailback, freshman
Shawn Jackson, rushed for
115 yards on 12 carries, and set up
the Seminoles' next touchdown
with runs of five, 14 and seven
yards. On first and goal from the
seven, backup fullback Paul Moore
nearly walked into the end zone,
giving FSU a 34-3 lead with :42
left in the third quarter.
FSU's Final touchdown came on
a one-yard run by fullback Maurice
Pinckney with 3:25 left in the
game. USC closed out all scoring
with backup quarterback Wright
Mitchell's 42-yard pass to Mario
Henry with 1:26 remaining.
FSU inside linebacker Kirk Carruthers,
who had seven tackles and
harrassed Fuller most of the afternoon,
was not surprised by the
Seminoles' domination.

Deboer is gang tackled by the
USC," Carruthers said. "They did
everything we thought they would.
We dominated for all four quarters.
We made the big plays when
we had to and took USC out of the
game. I think we displayed the
kind of talent needed to play in a
major bowl."
FSU head coach Bobby Bowden
expressed reason for optimism
among USC fans concerning the
Gamecocks' pending move into
the SEC.
'They'll have to beef it up, but I
think Sparky can do it (prepare the
team for SEC)," Bowden said.
"USC has everything a kid could
want in a university ? good facilities,
a good education ? but they
don't have the numbers within the
state to just recruit within South
Carolina. Recruiting out of state is
the difference. I think he's on the
right track now.
"We have too many good football
players," Bowden continued.
"South Carolina has some, but not
as many as we do. Our defense
was in complete control today and
that allowed us to run the ball. Our
offensive line played well and,
along with the defensive line, won
the game for us."
USC saw its record dip to 4-4
while FSU improved to 6-2. The
Gamecocks host Southern Illinois
Saturday while Florida State returns
home to face Cincinnati. '
