Glenn Jones to speak on 'distance education'
The Second Annual Address of the John J. Duffy Distance Education
Lecture Series will be presented by Glenn R. Jones at 4:00 p.m.
on October 24,1990, in Amoco Hall, Swearingen Engineering Center.
Glenn Jones is Chairman and CEO of Jones Intercable, Inc., parent
company of The Education Network, launched in 1987 as a 24-hour
cable service dedicated to using cable television to take education to
those prevented by time and distance from physically attending traditional
college campuses. Mr. Jones is author of the Jones Dictionary of
CATV Terminology and Make All America A School.
Jones Intercable, Inc., is a partner with the USC College of Library
and Information Science in the national Library and Information Science
Distance Education Consortium (LISDEC).
The John J. Duffy Distance Education Lecture Series is an annual
event sponsored by the College of Library and Informational Science
land Distance Education to encourage research in the area of distance
education and to reinforce the mission of the University of South Carolina
System to overcome barriers of time and place in making higher
education accessible to learners worldwide.
Scholarship honors retired chief of police
Friends and former colleagues of retired Columbia Chief of Police
R.A. Wilbur have established a University of South Carolina scholarchin

The Robert A. Wilbur Police Scholarship honors Wilbur's 34 years
of service in law enforcement by giving annual scholarships to selected
three-year veterans of the Columbia Police Department.
Recipients must have been admitted to USC's College of Criminal
Justice to complete a bachelor's degree or undertake a master's degree
and plan to continue with careers in police service.
The $500 scholarships will be given out annually beginning in the
fall of 1991, with the number of scholarships increasing as the endowment
grows, said Dr. James Fraser, an associate professor in USC's
College of Criminal Justice who assisted in establishing the
scholarship.
Wilbur, who joined the Columbia Police Department in 1956, was
named chief of police in 1982. He has been active in many Columbia
civic and service organizatons and has received many commenations,
including the Order of the Palmetto, the highest award a South Carolinan
can received from the state.
Contributions or pledges to the scholarship fund can be sent to the
