Experience \v
for USC bask
By RICH TAYLOR
Staff Writer
Experience, depth and versatility
are three characteristics of the
1990 Gamecock basketball team,
which began pre-season practice
on Monday, Oct. 15.
With the exception of part-time
starter Eric Sykes, everyone returns
for coach George Felton's
troops. Toss in Edmond Wilson,
who sat out last season because he
did not meet academic requirements,
and much-heralded freshman
Jamie Watson, and suddenly
you have the ingredients for what
should be Felton's finest USC
squad. ?
"This year is one that I look forward
to with great enthusiasm,"
Felton said. "We arc coming off a
very difficult year, but one that in
retrospect has provided our team
with great experience and
determination."
Injuries and academic shortcomings
depleted last year's roster,
leaving USC with only eight scholarship
players at season's end.
Felton's charges were still able to
fashion a 14-14 record, remarkable
considering the adversity faced by
the team. A year later, however,
that very adversity has been parlayed
into a more mature and more
experienced Gamecock squad.
"I look at this team as an experienced
team that dealt with a lot of
adversity last year," Felton said.
"But those adversities have, I feel,
turned into a plus. Our freshmen
had an opportunity to see quality
playing time. As a result, we are
returning a very experienced
team."
A trio of juniors are being heav i

into the upcoming season. Jo
Jo English is the squad's top returning
scorer at 15.3 points per
game. Barry Manning, who sat out
the final 24 games last season with
a broken bone in his left hand, will
team with English to form one of
the top guard tandems in the country.
Forward Joe Rhett also returns

Rhett was the Gamecock's leading
rebounder with 7.9 per game before
being sidelined for the season's
final six games.
Other key returnees include center
Jeff Roulston, who at 7-feet
and 250 pounds, has the size to be
a force in the middle. Michael
Glover, the team's lone senior, will
lend steady play and leadership to
the squad from his small forward
position. Bojan Popovic's athleticism
and hustle will again benefit
the backcourt, while his Yugoslavian

18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds
in die season finale against Clemson,
could be a big factor if he can
consistantly perform at that level.
Leso, at 6-feet 8-inches and 235
pounds, contributes necessary bulk
to the frontline.
Newcomer Wilson, a 6-feet
9-inch, 250-pound physical speciman,
will add great speed and
jumping ability to the frontcourt
while backing up Roulston.
Watson joins the Gamecocks after
a most distinguished prep career
in which he averaged over 30
points per game as a senior. A
prep all-American, Watson is a
6-feet 5-inch, 180-pound swingman
rated as USC's finest recruit
in over 15 years. If he can adjust
to the pressure that accompanies
high expectations, Watson may be
just the ingredient George Felton
needs for his team to bring home
the elusive Metro Conference
crown.
