Hollywood has come to
Columbia. I
There were lights, cameras and <
plenty of action. I
There was an awe in the air, a
sense of excitement The kind of J
thrills that only the likes of Steven i
Spielberg could provide. c
And drama, there was plenty of s
that. c
Let me set the scene for you. s
It was Tuesday night and the
lights were on at Williams-Brice c
Stadium. The scoreboard was lit ?
up, and there was an exciting feeling
in the air. t
People were gathered on the ii
third level of the stadium's southwest
ramp. The press was there in
full force, and a podium was set S
up. Behind the podium, beyond the c
empty playing field of scattered si
and shattered dreams sat the Columbia
skyline. The sun was set- n
ting, and the city's lights were si
pumping life into the evening.
Suddenly, 2001 came blaring b
over the public address system. pi
Goosebumps ? the kind you
get when the Gamecocks come out
of the tunnel to the crescendo of 2:
America's most inspirational pre- rs
game buildup. tc
As the last beats of 2001 shud- F
dered into my very soul, USC pi
President Arthur Smith and Athle- G
tic Director King Dixon came
storming down the ramp dressed in m
complete war gear ready to do the H
Gamecocks proud. ot

OK, so maybe it wasn't quite
bat dramatic but as famed ESPN
mnouncer Dick Vitale would say,
bis is the big time, babeeee. _
The 10 SEC presidents (Arkan- ,
;as doesn't have a vote yet) voted
manimously to offer the Game- ~
:ocks an invitation and USC considered
the invitation for all C(
)f... oh say two seconds, before UI
iccepting. Ti
The SEC is known for being
>ne of the best if not the best all- C(
ports conferences in the land. ar
USC will begin SEC competiion
in every sport except football
n 1991. And that's a relief. fo
Gamecock football teams have a
^/'A * ?
?ou winning percentage against a*
'EC competition. Sparky Woods se
ommented this could be the rea- w
on for the-unanimous vote.
USC should hold their own in 101
lost of the non-revenue sports
iich as baseball, softball and track. rel
The USC men's and women's
asketball teams will be hard fo
ushed but should fare well. s?
Football is another story.
Both the Associated Press Top
5 and the Gamecock Top 25 polls en
ink Auburn and Tennessee in the do,
>p five. In addition, AP ranks
lorida, Arkansas and USC in the itei
oil. The Gamecock poll adds v0
eorgia. cai
In the '80s, the SEC has had
ore AP national titles and more
eisman Trophy winners than any 1
her conference in the land. wil
There is a solid argument that tioi
e SEC is the premier football be
inference in the nation. <
The Gamecocks can use these at I

ogram to a level where they can in ]

USC Coach Sparky Woods calls
Swilling "a linebacker playing in
the secondary."
The Gamecocks counter with
the 25th ranked team in the nation
over all, 10th in total defense per
game and an offense led by the
seventh-rated quarterback in the
nation, junior Bobby Fuller.
Tech coach Bobby Ross has
called it "the biggest game we've
nad since I've been here" and
added it "has bowl implications."
Woods said the game means a lot
because of the interest level expressed
through the national coverage
of the game and the fact that
14,000 USC fans plan to make the
trip to Atlanta.
A sellout crowd of 46,000 is
expected.
Kickoff is 4:08 p.m. with live
television coverage on ESPN.
