FSU readie
while Game
So Rorida State is in the ACC.
The mighty Seminoles joined
the conference Saturday in case
you haven't heard.
But of course you've heard.
With the move by the Seminoles,
everyone seems to be
scrambling for conference affiliation.
Except, of course, we-cannotbe-bea
t-by-anyone -in -anyconference-so-we-won't-join
Notre
Dame. But Saturday night, the Irish
were almost beaten by Big 10
power Michigan. The key word
being "almost." But back to the
subject.
Let's look into my little crystal
ball and see FSU's future in the
ACC.
First of all, the Seminoles will
not have a full football conference
schedule until 1993 or 1994. That
means no conference championship
until at least then. But why
should Coach Bowden and FSU
fret, all a conference championship
would mean is a berth in the fifth,
maybe sixth, biggest bowl game
on New Year's Day ? the Citrus
bowl. But if FSU is tasting Sugar,
or tacos at the Fiesta or even Orange,
who cares about the Citrus.
As for FSU's football hopes, if
they are as strong in 1993 as they
are now, they should cruise
through the ACC like a hot knife
through butter. Clemson will be a
battle, as it has been in the past
years, and maybe Virginia, but,
otherwise, Seminole fans might as
well set up the tents in Orlando.
The Seminoles may have to get
used to scores like 105-70 in basketball.
. .or worse. FSU wasn't
too bad during the George
McCloud days in 1989 when they
played for the Metro title, but the
ACC isn't the Metro. And Florida
State isn't a North Carolina.
Just a side note ? Seminole
fans are used to the Metro atmosphere
of basketball. That will
have to change. Metro ball certainly
is exciting but not like ACC
hoops. Watch a FSU-Louisville
game ? pretty exciting. Now look
at a North Carplina-North Carolina
State game. See my point. I hojje
so.
In baseball, FSU is a monster.
In my mind, the most evenly
matched sport for the Seminoles
will be baseball. Clemson has
come on as of late, and North Carolina
and Georgia Tech are strong

in the South. It should be exciting.
In women's basketball, the ACC
will again lay the Seminoles on a
silver platter and have them for
dinner. N.C. State and Clemson
lead a strong corps of women's
hoops squads.
The ACC is also strong in soccer,
but I'm not even sure if the
Seminoles have a soccer team.
Sad.
Now to USC.
The Gamecocks are waiting to
see if the SEC will come calling
since FSU has made its move. The
word is that it is between the
Gamecocks and Miami.
It has been said USC has a better
overall sports program than the
Hurricanes, with nationally ranked
soccer, women's basketball, tennis
and swimming teams.
The Charlotte television market
is also an advantage to USC. Since
games broadcast from Charlotte
would reach more televisions than
in Miami, the Gamecocks seem
like a good choice.
Furthermore, USC has a geographic
advantage. The SEC would
stretch from Arkansas and Louisiana
straight to South Carolina instead
of dipping down into the bottom
of Florida.
But the problem remains. Football
is by far the SEC's main
araw, ana Miami is continually
strong when it comes to pigskin.
USC could hang with Kentucky,
Vanderbilt, the Mississippi teams
and probably Georgia. The problem
would be the rest of the conference.
At this stage, USC would
have their hands full with Auburn,
Tennessee, Florida, LSU and Alabama.
(Well, this year, Alabama
would have been a close game.)
But you smell the coffee, right?
It's all up to the SEC. Either
you go with football or you look at
the big picture. Of course, if USC
is invited, that doesn't mean
they'll accept the invitation.
But if they do get an invitation

Notre Dame capitalized from their victory over Michigan on Saturday
to re-gain the number position in The Gamecock Top 25 football poll.
Notre Dame gained 11 of the 15 first place votes to outdistance Florida
State, with one first place vote, for the top spot.
The Fighting Irish were previously ranked second behind the
Seminoles.
Illinois was the biccest mover in the noil as fhp.v mnvp/l nn thrpp enrvtc
from the No. 25 position.
Florida cracked into the poll with a No. 24 ranking. The Gators are
making their first appearance in the poll after upsetting Alabama on
Saturday.
Penn State's loss to Southern Cal dropped the Nittany Lions out of the
poll.
Tennessee, Auburn and Oklahoma each gained a first place vote.
