Sparky and tl
perform well
I suppose most of you think that
I'm a know-it-all. Last week, it
svas tips for USC football games.
<\nd this week, to top that, I think
['11 give Sparky Woods an early
report card alter Uit s iirst game
and victory over Duke.
Too much football, you think?
Welcome to the South.
As I sat out behind the Tally-Ho
:lub about an hour before kickoff,
[ had my doubts.
They said, "Duke has two potent
quarterbacks in Billy Ray and
Dave Brown." They followed that
with, "USC's secondary is inexperienced
and suspect"
Well, I put two and two
together, as I often do, and began
to see visions. Visions of Billy
Ray completing 30 of 30 pass attempts
for 976 yards and 8 TDs.
Tben, I heard more.
They also said, "Duke's defense
is young except for their seconiary."
Great. We have a brand
lew quarterback, who will need to
complete some passes to get his
confidence up.
More visions. Fuller throws seyen
interceptions and is sacked 12
Limes.
(You have to understand I can
get wacky when it comes to USC
football.)
So I sat there, waiting for the
kickoff, wondering if we would
even score. I trudged over to
Williams-Brice and eventually sat
down. And, thanks to Sparicy and
the Gamecocks, I was pleasantly
surprised.
After an exchange of possessions,
Mike Dingle ran wild for
USC, including a 31-yard ramble
that was only stopped when Dingle
ran over Robert Brooks.
And on third and goal, when the
Gamecocks of old would have
fumbled or botched a play and had
to settle for a field goal, Fuller hit
Albert Haynes in the flat for an

Despite being sacked seven
times, Fuller's arm was fairly
accurate.

Early in the second quarter,
Dingle's hard running, and a
43-yard Fuller-to-Brooks completion
set up the second USC score.
Dingle ran hard the entire game
for USC, gaining 113 yards, and
said afterwards that he was
"pissed-off' before the game by
something he read, but he
wouldn't comment further. He obviously
silenced the skeptics with
Saturday night's performance.
Fuller hit Brooks late in the fist
half for USC's third TD, and a
21-3 halftime advantage. I was
starting to feel a little bit more
comfortable, but I still realized that
Duke had another potent quarterback
in Dave Brown.
Duke came out in the second
half the same team. Not just in
personnel but also in their play. On
their first drive, Billy Ray lined up
in the shot gun. And got eaten up
by USC's Corey Miller, who Ray
would later call, " a stud."
Duke did come back on their
next drive and score but it was all
they could do in the game. Ray
completed some long strikes but
was relegated, most of the time, to
scrambling, which he did very
well, handing off to Duke's Randy
