Golden Key chapter wins national award
The USC chapter of Golden Key National Honor Society was presented
the Most Improved Chapter Award at the 1990 Golden Key
National Convention, held August 9-12 in Scottsdale, Ariz. This
award is given to the chapter that has been active for more than one
full school year and has most dramatically improved their level of
communication, activity and participation.
The chapter was selected from the Society's 161 collegiate chapters
to earn the 1990 award. Activities implemented by the chapter during
the past year include both community and campus activities.
Golden Key is a national, non?profit honors organization founded
to provide recognition to academically motivated juniors and seniors
in all undergraduate fields of study. In the past 13 years, the Society
has inducted over 250,000 student members, as well as almost 3,000
professionals, educators and leaders who hold honorary membership.
Volunteers to hold first regional conference
USC will sponsor its first regional Community Service Conference
to be held on Oct. 26 and 27. This conference is for any students
interested in community service work, as well as, faculty and staff
who want to support student involvement in volunteer service.
The conference will provide an accessible opportunity for students
from campuses in the Southeast region to share ideas and stimulate
awareness and interest in volunteerism. Experienced members of both
civic and collegiate communities will work together to provide guidance
and lead discussions on various issues concerning campus involvement
in community service.
Further information can be obtained by calling Gail McGrail at
777?5780.
Deployed students to receive tuition refund
USC students with reserve or active military obligations will receive
full tuition refunds if they are deployed during the fall semester
to the Middle East as part of the "Desert Shield" operation.
"We're aware that many students, particularly at the Shaw and
Myrtle Beach Air Force bases, are reluctant to register for university
courses this fall because of the possibility of being deployed during
the semester," Dr. R. W. Denton, executive vice president for business
and finance, said.
"We want to assure these students that several positive options will
be available to them."

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The bodies of a
man and a woman were found at a student
apartment complex Tuesday, a day after police
said they believed the earlier grisly deaths of
three young women were linked.
Law enforcement authorities said they didn't
know whether the fourth and fifth deaths were
related to the earlier slayings. But they said
they were investigating the latest deaths as a
possible double murder, and state officials
braced for that possibility.
"It looks like it's a part of a serial killer,"
state university system Chancellor Charles Reed
said Tuesday in Tallahassee, Fla. "It's a community
problem. It's not just a university prob- lem.
We are taking every precaution we possibly
can."
There were no plans to cancel classes, but
students were being encouraged to stay on campus,
Reed said. "We think our campus is more
secure than the surrounding community right
now," he said.
Florida Gov. Bob Martinez urged young people
to avoid staying alone in this college community,
where fall classes opened Monday at
the University of Florida and nearby Santa Fe
Community College.
Alachua Sheriff's Lt. Spencer Mann said the
bodies of a man and a woman were found

Martinez said authorities weren't speculating
that a "Ted Bundy copycat" serial killer was on
the loose, but the governor said the FBI and
"out-of-state experts" are involved in the
investigation.
FBI agents joined Gainesville authorities
Monday, and Martinez dispatched the state police
mobile crime lab to Gainesville.
On the campus, the slayings stirred memories
of Bundy. He was executed in Florida's electric
chair on January 24, 1989, after murdering dozens
of young women, including two Florida
State University students in Tallahassee in a
1978 rampage he followed with the murder of a
14-year-old schoolgirl in Lake City.
"That's what we're all saying. It's another
Ted Bundy on the loose," Jana Walters, 18, a
freshman from Longwood, Fla., said Monday.
"Some sicko."
Authorities have declined to give details on
the bodies and the possible links.
The Gainesville Sun, however, reported Tuesday
the mutilations of the bodies at the two separate
apartments was the apparent connection.

freshmen Christina P. Powell, 17, of Jackson- >
ville and Sonya Larson, 18, of Deerfield Beach. '
Their bodies were found Sunday afternoon.
Eight hours later, at another southwest
Gainesville apartment about two miles away, ;
Alachua County deputies found the body of
Christa L. Hoyt, 18, a student at nearby Santa
Fe Community College and a full-time records
clerk at the Alachua County Sheriffs Office, ;
the college's President Lawrence Tyree said '
Monday.
"The two crimes could have been done by
the same individual," Gainesville Police Chief
Wayland Clifton said Monday. "The method of
operation in these cases are similar."
The Sun quoted unidentified sources as say- ;
ing that Hoyt had been decapitated and her
breasts mutilated, while at least one of the other
victims had her nipples cut off.
Police would not confirm the reports but
feared more killings were possible because of
the gruesomeness of the slayings.
"I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure
out that anybody that commits homicide using
mutilation is a pretty sick individual, and
it's somebody we want to get off the streets
very badly," said Spencer Mann, spokesman for
the Alachua County Sheriff's Office.
