The USC soccer team will open
its 1990 season in the same place
it ended it in 1989. *
' The Gamecocks travel to Charlottesville,
Va. for the Virginia
Coca-Cola Classic on Friday to
meet George Mason. USC meets
defending co-national champion
Virginia on Saturday.
With the start of the season less
than a week away, head coach
Mark Berson seems happy about
the condition of his players.
"The group developed a good
work ethic during the preseason.
That is one of the key ingredients.
They also came back with a good
attitude and are prepared to work
hard. The fitness level of the players
was also good."
The Gamecocks lost only three
players off of last year's 17-3-2
squad, but one of those losses was
goalkeeper Chris Foley because of
surgery.
Returning to guard the net for
USC is Spencer Leuders, who has
played all spring for USC and
backed up Foley in 1989.
Challenging Foley for the goalkeeper
slot are three freshmen. David
Turner, a redshirt freshman
from Winter Park, Fla., is, according
to Berson, a half-step ahead of
the other two newcomers in the
battle for the starting slot.
The other losses were Arnar
Jonhson and Scott Henderson out
of the defense.
"All of our losses are in the

will be team captain Tommy

"He is one of the premier defenders
in America," Berson said of

position.
Besides goalkeeper, the only
spot on the Gamecock squad still
up for grabs is the left back position.
Berson says the top two
choices for the slot are sophomores
Chris Crosby and Andy Ferguson.
The midfield and offense of
USC will be strong again in 1990.
The midfield, which Berson
calls one of the best in the country,
is led by Phil Seidenberg and 1989
national freshman of the year Ruben
Tufino. Also returning in the
midfield are Jeff Love and Greg
Strehmel.
"They have the three things you
look for in a midfield: talent, experience
and ability," Berson said.
"It is pretty solid."
On offense, Berson said the
Gamecocks are returning with a
very potent attack. Senior Clark
Brisson, an All-American in 1989,
leads the attack.
Brisson scored a team record of
21 goals this past season. He is
aided by Andrew Coggins, who
scored seven goals in 1989, and
Jonas Gudjonsson, who tallied five
goals and seven assists.
"Andrew has the strength and
the power," Berson said. "Clark
has the ability to take on other
players and Jonas is clever and

Cowabunga sports fans! It's
time to start the year of academics
and athletics. Today, we're going
to combine both while discussing
the wonderful world of football ?
European style, otherwise known
as soccer.
Since the round balls will be
bouncing soon over at the Graveyard,
we decided it was time to give
the readers a little bit of soccer literacy
through some key facts and
terms.
Terms:
Pitch ? This is the playing
surface, not when the ball is
thrown into play.
Boots ? Soccer shoes, not to
be confused with the referee "booting"
a player out of the match.
Match ? No, this is not what
the fans use to light the fireworks
- shot at the opposing team. It is the
term for a game.
Nil ? Zip, zero, ziltch, nada,
nothing. /
Drop ? To pass the ball,
usually with the heal of your foot,
straight back. In soccer, dropping
the ball is a positive thing.
Square *? Not your roommate,
Passing the ball horizontally
left or right.
Mark ? to cover an opposing
player. Also the first name of Head
Coach Berson).

terms, lets try some key facts.
In soccer there are two
45-minyte halves, giving a match
90 minutes. However, time seldom
stops and is counted upwards (ie:
20 minutes into the second half is
considered the 65 minute).
The ball must be completely
over the line, either in the air or on
the ground, before it can be considered
out of bounds.
In soccer, goals are scored
not points.
For punishment, the referee
hands out yellow and red cards.
Sorry, Visa and Mastercard are not
accepted. A yellow card is given
as a warning; and if two are received
in the same match, the
player is ejected. A red card is
cause for immediate ejection and
suspension from the next match.
For rule infractions, the refe- ;
ree can award direct or indirect
kicks. An indirect kick is for minor >
fouls, and the ball must be touched '
by another player before going into
the goal. A direct kick is awarded ;
for rough fouls and goals can be ;
scored off the kick without anyone ;
else touching the ball.
With the wisdom just given to
you in this column, we will leave
you with this ? football matches ;
at USC are played on a pitch
where players drop and square the ball
in hope of a goal. If all goes
well, the Gamecocks will win 2-nil
in 90 minutes of action.
You got that? Good.
<2^ best in all of us.
