Battle ove Mitchell hoj experience, < By DOUG AUBE Sports Editor For the past four football seasons, USC fans have lived and died with the successes and failures of a certain quarterback by me name 01 cms. Now that Ellis has used up all of his college eligibility, USC fans are asking the question: who is going to fill Ellis' shoes? The everpressing answer to this question is that either Bobby Fuller or Wright Mitchell will step in as quarterback but regardless of who wins the job, the starter will be wearing his own shoes and not those of Ellis. The start of the 1990 season is less than a week away and both Fuller and Mitchell are locked in a fierce battle for the vacant quarterback job. The latest depth chart lists Fuller as the No. 1 quarterback and Mitchell No. 2. Head coach Sparky Woods does not want to get into a rotating quarterback position so this last week of practice could make or break either candidates chances of starting. "We're going to be a really good team ... .We just have to be sharper," he said. "We've made some stupid mistakes and penalties in the scrimmages. We are starting to come together." Fuller also likes the looks of his teammates on offense and defense. "Overall, we have great receivers," he said. "I can't say enough about them. The offensive line is really improved also." Fuller also credited the seconlary, suspect in the 1989 season, For improvement and added that the defensive line of this year's squad is one of the strong points.
