Pump Up the Volume is a new
film in the teenaeer vs. authority
sub-genre. It should not be confused
with anything that could
happen in real life.
The movie stars the young actor
Christian Slater, who always seems
to imitate Jack Nicholson. Besides
sounding like him, Slater has some
of Nicholson's intensity and charisma.
That said, even Jack could
not have made up for the lousy
screenplay.
Slater plays a pirate disk-jockey
(Mark, alias "Hard Harry") who
broadcasts a radio show for local

and in this way Volume is reminiscent
of Oliver Stone's Talk Radio
A big difference is that the listeners
of the d.j. in Talk Radio
were never seen. There can only
be so many scenes of teens going

Allan Moyle (writer/director of
this movie) tries to make this movie
into a grand statement about
the lack of free expression in modern
America. Teen angst is explored
well at first, with a depressingly
realistic teenage suicide.
However, the movie disintegrates
after that as the high school
moves further and further from reality.
Ridiculous situations are the
realm of comedy and action films,
not social commentaries.
