Improved? Optimism a as Gameco< By FRED GONZALEZ Sports editor Optimism seems to be the key word heading into the 1990 football season for USC. Some of the big stars might be gone, but the talent is there "There will be excitement this coming season," head coach Sparky Woods said. "We got a lot of new faces, as graduation hit us hard. But we have a lot of new people that will play. We're just 'not going to have much experience." Since the season is only two weeks away, here is a positional breakdown of the Gamecocks. Offensive line: This should be a strength for USC this season. The line will be anchored by senior tackles Ike Harris and Calvin j Stephens. "Tackles are a real busy [ (running) alley, and there are two jj good ones there. The questions will come with the inside players," ! Woods said. Danny Branch, a ju| nior guard, was injured during ; spring practice but will be ready tby Sept.l. Antoine Rivens will be the other guard. The battle for center will be between senior Hal Hamrick or junior Jay Killen, a transfer from Appalachian State. And yes, he did play with quarterback candidate Bobby Fuller at ASU. # Runningback: Gone is Harold Green, but his replacement is of the same caliber. Mike Dingle, who rushed for 513 yards last season, will be the go-to man for the first part of the season, but the am I*.**. A!> JAMdUiC Will UC uil 1115 uacnups LU provide quality time. "Our depth at runningback is a concern, but I feel good about the ones we have. And no one could complain about having a Mike Dingle on your team," Woods said. Gerald Williams, who was to be the top backup, is academically ineligible, so Albert Haynes, a junior who TT ' Heres TheS Your I ( t I - 5 J I ' . Quarterback: Gone is Todd Ellis, the winningest quarterback in USC history. And he will be tough to replace. But competing for the starting job are sophomore Wright Mitchell and- ASU transfer Bobby Fuller. Woods has said he does not alternate quarterbacks during a game, so he prefers a starter and a back-up. And Woods has said the job is Fuller's to lose, as the performance of Mitchell may determine who's starting. In two years at ASU, Fuller passed for over 2,200 yards. # Wide Receivers and Tight End: This is the strongest part of the Gamecock offense. "With (Robert)Brooks, (Carl) Piatt and (Eddie) Miller, we want to be able to throw the ball," Woods said. Brooks, now a junior, has caught 68 passes for 979 yards in two seasons. Others of note are David Pitchko, a Steve Largent type receiver, and redshirt freshmen Mario Henry. At tight end, USC must replace David Hodge, but * look for freshman Matthew Campbell to give Charles Steward a tough battle for the starting job. Campbell, from North Augusta, has received nothing but praise since he arrived. "He needs to play and we need to use him as much as we can. He's smart and talented, but we must remeber he's only 18-years-old," Woods said. Defensive Line: This will be another strong point for the Gamecocks. Having swithced from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3, USC will have a better suited pass rush. Anchoring the group will be senior Corey Miller, an All-American candidate who had 77 tackles and seven sacks last season. Kurt Wilson returns from ankle surgery and will be a big factor along with junior See GAMECOCKS page 12-B i How lb State A Pi ife Ever ' , , vU Uin\ puin L 0> >ut the coupon below and enc leek or money order made p? d Company and return it to 1 the rest.
