I should forget the movie and watch the pre
views, I thought.
I had little to fear. This movie does have i
all. From the moment Dick Tracy starts, you en
ter its richly imagined world and you are sur
rounded by it, enveloped in its wealth of colo
and detail and action until Warren Beatty an<
his crew are ready to let you go.
The film is a visual feast. There's a sense o
so much happening, so much to see, all withou
a single wasted detail or moment. The film'
primary color scheme lends it a comic-bool
simplicity, yet its attention to detail and ligh
may remind you of the Baroque seediness o
Reginald Marsh's New York paintings. This re
suits in a dynamic visual tension. Dick Tracy i
a comic strip come to life in a child's dream.
As for plot, character interaction dominate
the film. Tracy must come to terms with hi
fatherly instincts towards the Kid, a homeles
pickpocket. Tracy must struggle with his con
flict between his love for Tess Truehart and hi
attraction to Breathless Mahoney. These emo

Maaonna was a pieasani source or surprise.
Though she's a marvelous performer in some of
her music videos, I had low expectations about
her acting. Yet as the torch-singer cum gang3
ster's moll she was sultry and sexy, a study in
. poise and restraint. Possessed of a cat-like grace
and near as many sexual innuendos as Mae
t West's mouth could ever hold, her Breathless
- Mahoney was the embodiment of both a comic
strip femme-fatale and a Hollywood glamour
r queen.
i Although he'd done a good job in many of
his previous film roles, Warren Beatty could not
f invest Dick Tracy with adequately heroic propt
ortions. Sure he's tough on criminals and yeah,
s he throws some pretty mean punches. But the
k hook-nosed, squinty-eyed relentlessness of the
t comic-strip character was little to be seen. In
f the comic-strip Dick Tracy you find an intensity
- that is rock-hard, impacable ? justice seems
s fated and inevitable.
That's not to say Beatty did a terrible job,
s however. I suspect that the Dick Tracy created
5 in the movie script was not intended to be a
s copy of the comic-strip version. The movie portrayal
of Dick Tracy endowed the character
5 with more sublety and range in his emotional

the single-minded sternness to be found in thi
comic's hero. As a result, Dick Tracy's origins
gigantic stature was whittled down to more ere
dible and human size. Ideally, we deserved bot
a creaioie ainu larger-tnan-ine nero. But nu
maity is never a poor trade-off.
This movie boasts an accomplished cast, bi
one actor stands above the rest. A1 Pacino treat
us with a wonderful performance as Tracy'
great nemesis, Big Boy Caprice. Pacino's actin
is pure brilliance. His Caprice attracts and re
pels at once: when he paraphrases famou
thinkers of the past, he is hilarious; when he i
matter-of-fact and meekly apologetic as he's ab
out to gruesomely end someone's life, he i
chilling. Pacino practically steals the show wit)
this role, the same way Jack Nicolson did as th
Joker in Batman. Prosthetic makeup success
fully creates Big Boy's looks, but Pacino sup
plies the heart and soul. Big Boy Caprice i
hands-down the most memorable character ii
the film.
Except for a lack of total success in Beatty'
role, this movie doesn't strike a false note. It i
briskly paced, visually seductive, well-produce<
and full of cinematic energy. Hollywood too of
ten succeeds in whetting our movie-going appe
tites but usually fails to sate it. If you've yet t(
see it, you may be wondering as I was, "Is th<
movie as good as the preview?" Wonder n<
more. Dick Tracy is a blockbuster that lives u]
to its name.
By the way, the Roger Rabbit cartoon pre
ceding the film was fabulous. Roller coaster:
