Last Thursday I attended thr
meeting of the Intercollegiate Activities
Committee at the Osborne
Administration Building. After
waiting for over an hour for the
executive session to end, I and
several other members of the media
were allowed in for the open
seesion. There, athletic director
King Dixon gave his state-of-theUSC-athletic-department
address.
Here are some of the highlights:

been sold. And on Aug. 29 there

Cockabooses will be featured on
ESPN during their broadcast of the
NFL exhibition game.
# When USC has a home
game, Williams-Brice becomes the
fourth largest city in the state of
South Carolina.
# Involving expansion, USC ]
interim president Arthur K. Smith <
said USC is in close contact with ]
the presidents of the Southeastern
Conference and the Atlantic Coast i
Conference. "We are not simply |
just sitting back." Yet, the committee
favors an all-sports Metro conference
and there are no legal ties
that would hold USC from jumping
to another conference, like the
University of Arkansas did to the
SEC. Now that the Razorbacks are i
a member of the SEC, Smith still i
feels the SEC will consider USC. ^
"I can't imagine any reason why >
the SEC wouldn't offer us (a position)."

The freshmen on the Gamecock
football squad reported Sunday for
a wcck ui uucuuuiun. i iic varsity
squad reports Thursday. Non contact
drills for the entire varsity
team begin this Saturday with contact
drills beginning August 15.
Two a day practice is open to the
public, with practices there after
being closed the remainder of the
season. During two a day workouts,
the Gamecocks will practice
at 9 a.m. and at 4 p.m. at the practice
field complex behind the Rex
Enright Athletic Center on Rosewood
Drive.

production company, will televise
six of South Carolina's 1990 football
games over a network of stations
in South Carolina, North Carolina
and Georgia as well as on
cable systems that will reach much
of the nation.
USC athletic director King Dixon
said SportsNet will originate
live broadcasts of the Gamecock
road game at Virginia Tech and
home games against East Carolina
and Florida State. They will air delayed
telecasts of home games
with Duke, North Carolina and
The Citadel.
Veteran sportscaster Jim
Thacker of Charlotte wilj be the
play-by-play announcer with former
Gamecock and National Football
League punter Max Runager
providing color analysis. Jon
Pritchett will be the sideline announcer.
Jim Forest, president of
SportsNet, will be the executive
producer of Gamecock and Toby
Jenkins will be the producer.
