The Afred Uhry play about people's inherent dependency on one another despite fundamental differences is superbly directed by Ann Dreher. Dreher, with the help of three very talented actors, believably turns an almost bare stage into three decades of Atlanta, Ga. roads. Ruth Moore plays the sometimes prejudice, always strong-willed Daisy Wertan. Moore makes Miss Daisy into a very likable woman who just happens to be set in her ways. Moore convincingly ages over time in the play. She leaves no doubt in the audience's mind that she is loosing sight and mind and becoming feeble as the years pass in the play. When Miss Daisy succumbs to senility, Moore creates a cathartic tension in which the audience suffers along with this woman who has struggled her whole life to remain independent. Hoke Coleburn, Miss Daisy's chauffeur, is played to the comic hilt by Bernard Addison. In the end, however, it is not a money that makes his equally aged character visit her in the nursing home, but the friendship that has developed between. Paris Peet plays Boolie, Miss Daisy's caring and ambitious, son. Peet creates a character who seems genuinely regretful that he cannot personally take care of his mother, but practical enough to realize he must nass that job on to another. Peet's character does not seem to evolve or age in lie wav Moore and Addison's do. but that could he. iue in part to Uhry's script and Dreher's direction to contrast a world that is often resistant to change and Vliss Daisy and Hoke's growing relationship. All of the other elements in the play were equally well done. Lighting, costuming and set desiign were ill impressively well done. Lighting was often effectively used to single out a character and set them apart from their counterparts and the world. Driving Miss Daisy is a crisp, upbeat and wellexecuted production. It is a must see. This month's run at Dreyton Hall has ended, but luckily the play will resume July 6 and run through July 25.
