Patrick Swayze and Demi Mooore are
lovers in the movie Ghost.
By MICAH PORTER
Staff Writer
I could only get one complimentary ticket,
so I went to see Ghost by myself. This
wouldn't have been so bad had Ghost not been
so good. I wanted to talk about the pottery
wheel love scene, and the death scenes, and
how Demi Moore is so cute in this movie. I
couldn't then, so I'll tell you about it now.
The movie begins with Sam Wheat, played
by Patrick Swayze, and Molly Jensen, played
by Demi Moore, moving into a Tribecka loft
in New York City. Sam is an investment
banker, and Molly is an artist, and both are
very much in love. However, a great deal of
foreshadowing is enough to give the viewer
the idea that Sam isn't going to be around
much longer. Sure enough, only 20 minutes
into the movie, Sam is killed by a mugger on a
deserted street.
However, Swayze does not make an early
exit, because banker Sam Wheat reappears as
disembodied spirit Sam Wheat As he wanders
around in the ether, passing through things
with some great special effects, he discovers
that Molly's life is in danger. Vet Sam, being
the ghost that he is, has no way to contact
Molly until he accidentally discovers Oda Mae

Brown, played wonderfully by Whoopie Gold
berg. Oda Mae is a con artist who claims to b<
able to "contact the spirits." The fun staiu
when she discovers that she really can heai
Sam's ghost. Once this is established, the movie
really gets moving; Sam uses Oda Mae tc
contact Molly, and later, to exact his revenge.
Aside from the plot and excellent writing,
one of the strong points of this movie is the
casting. Goldberg plays the role of Oda Mae
Brown perfectly, giving an otherwise dramatic
movie some comical touches. And Demi
Moore's Molly is the type of character that
girls think is cute and guys fall in love with.
One final plaudit goes to Vincent Schiavelli.
I've seen Schiavelli many times on film and
television, but his performance here made me
remember his name. He plays a dark, psychotoic
ghost who first attacks Sam's spirit, but
later teaches him a valuable lesson. His character
is one of the most interesting in the
movie.
The one weak point in casting is Patrick
Swayze as Sam Wheat. For the most part,
Swayze does a good job, but there are times
when Swayze acts like he is still on the set of

Roadhouse and someone has just stolen his

5 pretty well.
r This is a movie with many good scenes, but
perhaps the best is the first love scene. Before
' this. Sam and Mollv's relatinnshin Hnp.sn'f
seem particularly special, but through good
music (The Righteous Brothers' Unchained
Melody), a pottery wheel and a jukebox, Sam
and Molly's love becomes evident. Another
nice touch is what the filmakers refer to as the
pass-through effects, which are the special effects,
like passing through walls and people,
which make Sam really seem like a ghost.
Some other great effects are shown in the
death scenes. Some people are slated for heavan,
and the visualizaion of that is predictable.
However, other people are hell-bound when
they die, and the scenes of people being
dragged that way are pretty intense stuff; they
might make an atheist consider religion.
Ghost is one of the few movies worth the
price of admission. Don't make the mistake I
made of going by yourself. Even though the
ending is a little sappy, the movie really is
date movie material; she'll cry, and you'll pretend
not to.

Let's be perfectly honest. Mil

out they might not be singing then
in concert, but are instead lip

some extent Modonna and cer
tainly others.
With Madonna it's a little diffe
rent because she will tell her audi
ence that during particular parts o
her show she will not be able t<
sing and dance at the same tim<
and will therefore be lip-syncing
Fair enough.
Even artists like Steve Via pla?
to recordings in concert, but th<
main point is is that he is stil
playing part of the music himself.
However, a band that woulc
come out and perform under the
context of actually singing anc
playing when they are not destroy;
the whole concept of what a live
show is supposed to be about.
When I go to a concert, I go tc
see the the members of a favorite
band as the larger than life figures
they promote themselves as, yel
being flesh and blood at the same
UUlts.
In concert, the audience are supposed
to be able to hear the
nuances of the music which comes
out when the performers actually
play, not the engineered and overly
produced album sound.
However, I'm really not shocked
at the advent of more lip-syncing.
The music industry figured out that
with videos it could now sell good
looks, good hair and good dance
steps a lot faster and for more profit
than it could go to the trouble to
find talent.

a they should have the musical talent
to back it up. Even Duran Duran
3 could play their instruments and
look good while doing so, so why
can't these guys?
These bands could could get
more respect trying to really perf
form than they can lip-syncing, be5
cause they certainly don't get any

What's realy troubling to me is
that these people get signed to maf
jor lables and they go on world;
wide tours while bands that are out
1 playing the music they love might
never get that much success.
I Let's face it, someone as ugly as

> would certainly get sign to a small
' label, but he would probably never
get a lot of notoriety. Even many
' oi todays neavy meiaiers are just

expect them to be able to perform.
t
Actually, I think Satan is behind
this whole lip-syncing thing, because
he can't hide any subliminal
messages in live performances to
corrupt the impressionable youth at
the concerts.
I don't know if I've really said
anything here today, but I hope it
