In case you have been numb to the news lately, the brouhaha was over the banning of rap group 2 Live Crew's album Nasty as they wanna be. Despite the band's nasty lyrics, it has been defended by some not so nasty people. Sen. Theo Mitchell was on hand to speak out against censorship of the group's music. "Who is going to make the decision on what we hear?" he asked. The senator said he had no comment on the race of the band being an issue "because the Constitution is color blind." Sasha Kennison, co-ordinater for the rally and assistant director of South Carolina Individual Liberty Union said she organized the rally because she felt the group should be able to sell and perform. "We want to defend freedom of expression and speech. No individual group of government should take away those rights. The solicitor is taking away these rights," she said. Kennison gathered some figures from SLED and claims that persons are twice as likely to get murdered, raped and robbed in Richland County as opposed to Lexington County, where the music has not been banned. "Wherever there's a lot of people, there'll be some violence," he said. Solomon did not see what all the fuss was about with the group's lyrics. "You hear it in school all the time," he said. Kennison called it "ridiculous" that music will inspire violent acts. Violence is inherent, not a factor of music, she explained. Tanya Gunter, a Clemson student, also donned a sign for the cause and said, "I don't know what Anders was taught in school, but I was taught the Constitution." It has no color,it is not sexist and it is international. Music provokes feelings of joy and happiness and also sorrow and pain. Thus, because of our musical conductors we can experience the pleasure of music. It is the conductors who mold each note into the sounds of perfection. From June 25-July 20, 58 of the nation's most promising conductors will grace our campus as they join together to celebrate the 10th Anniverary of the USC Conductors' Institute. It will consist of hours of hard work and sweat for the participants. For seven hours each day and several evening hours the participants will rehearse music and undergo critique. They work with a live, full-scale orchestra each day and the participants are videotaped at the podium leading the orchestra. All of this in the name of perfecting their talent of conducting. Also, Diamond has been commisioned to compose a piece especially for the USC Conductors' Institute, which will premier during Friday's performance. "The institute is a place where the students can work together harmoniously without a frantic competivness," Seattle Symphony Conductor Milton Katims said. "I know of no comparable learning opportunity for young conductors anywhere in the world. Bravo!" The show Friday will begin at 8 p.m. at the Koger Center.
