sell tickets to 2 Live
By The Associated Press
A state judge on Monday refused to order the City
of Charleston to sell tickets to a concert by the
raunchy rap group 2 Live Crew through city-owned
ticket outlets.
Circuit Judge Richard Fields denied a promoter's
request for an injunction forcing the city to sell tickets
for Thursday night's concert through South Carolina
Automated Ticketing, or SCAT, outlets.
Mayor Joe Riley Jr., who ordered the ticket ban last
week, applauded the ruling.
"What we've said is, if you have made an album

A federal judge in Florida has ruled the group's
sexually explicit album As Nasty As They Wanna Be
to be obscene, and solicitors have banned sales of the
album in four S.C. counties and in the city of Aiken.
The album can be sold in Charleston County.
Fields, in his seven-page ruling in a suit brought by
promoter Kevin Hollinshead, did not address the obscenity
issue and said he did not review lyrics submitted

Lake Baikal
By The Associated Press
Clemson University researchers
will travel to the world's deepest
lake ? Lake Baikal in the Soviet
Union ? to help the U.S.S.R. assess
the environmental quality of
the 395-mile-long body of water.
Ron Kendall, director of the Institute
of Wildlife and Environmental
Toxicology, and two other
researchers will travel to Irkutsk,
near the Mongolian border, in
September.
In addition to being the world's
deepest lake, at more than 5,000
feet, Lake Baikal holds about a
fifth of the world's fresh water not
in ice, Kendall said.
The lake also is home to more
than 1,500 species of plants, fish
and animals, such as seals and
freshwater sponges. Many of the
species are found nowhere else in
