Lake Baikal in the Soviet Union ? to help the U.S.S.R. assess the environmental quality of the 395-mile-long body of water. Ron Kendall, director of the Institute of Wildlife and Environmental Toxicology, and two other researchers will travel to Irkutsk, near the Mongolian border, in September. In addition to being the world's deepest lake, at more than 5,000 feet, Lake Baikal holds about a fifth of the world's fresh water not in ice, Kendall said. The lake also is home to more than 1,500 species of plants, fish and animals, such as seals and freshwater sponges.
