It's grab bag time. And this
^eek the topics of discussion
ange from golf to soccer. Let's
'tart off with golf.
Even though the season for the
hen's golf team here at Carolina is
>ver, it should not have ended as
toon as it did. When the NCAA
jolf Committee selected the teams
tor the NCAA championships, the
jamecocks were not chosen while
iVake Forest was.
Wake had a horrible spring seafm
for a school with their tradiJn,
with two of their top players
>n academic suspension. In the
nean time, the Gamecocks.had a
i-1 record against the Deacons in
he spring and a 24 shot advantage,
^hy the Gamecocks weren't
lelected is beyond me.
In a poll of the NCAA Regional
Selection Committee dated April
SO, Wake Forest was ranked ninth
n District III-N with 280 points.
South Carolina was ranked seventh
' jth 380 points. While the Game^jks
played in the Metro tournament
and finished second, Wake
lidn't play again until after selecion
time. Yet the Demon Deacons
iomehow moved over the Gamecocks
in the rankings when all was
laid and done. A very sour note
or the Gamecocks to end a super
ieason on.
Now moving on to baseball, and
he city of Chicago. Last season
he Cubs took the windy city by
Lfprm by winning the National
irjgue East. This year their in-city
ivals, the White Sox, are the ones
aking the city by storm.
This past weekend'the White
>ox hosted the American League
Vest leading Oakland A's in their
irst confrontation of the season. In
i soldout Comiskey Park, which is
n its final year as home to the
Vhite Sox, Chicago defeated Oakand
to cut the A's lead down to
>ne game. But the A's won the
ast three games of the four game
eries to leave Chicago with a four
me lead. It was a series where

White Sox fans had something to
cheer about, while Oakland
showed why they are the World
Champs.
In a year where champions in
pro football and pro basketball
have repeated (San Francisco and
Detroit), the A's look ready to
continue the trend. But that pesky
group in Chicago might provide
some head aches for Tony LaRussa's
bunch.
Now on to soccer, the last item
in the grab bag. As the second
round of the World Cup draws
nearer and nearer (this weekend to

my crystal ball and predict who
will make it to the round of 16.
In Group A, Italy and Czechoslavakia
will escape, while in
Group B, Cameroon, Argentina
and Romania will make the field.
In Group C, Brazil, Costa Rica and
Scotland will make the second
round, while in Group (>, only
West Germany and Yugoslavia
will advance. Group E will have
Spain, Belgium and Uruguay advancing,
while in Group F, England,
Egypt and Holland will make
it, but don't ask me how.
Group F has lived up to its billing
as the strongest group, and I
would hate to see a four way tie
for first Then spots would have to
drawn, and that could be quite
controversial. The English are
known for their rowdy fans, and
some have said that the Italians
don't want to see them reach the
mainland. (England has been playing
all their games on the islands
of Italy) But if all goes well, it
could very well be the English
who have the last laugh.
