Murphy and help him to get back
his groove.
TTie Braves are only batting .203
as a team, which is also last in the
league, but they only had three
weeks of spring training.
So give them a chance. They'll
come around.
The acquisition of Jim Presley
was a good one. The Braves now
have a young third baseman who
can field and hit. His .278 average
is second on the team to Tread
way s .279.
The outfield is a fairly solid one
with Odibe "oh to be young
again", McDowell, Lonnie "Pillsbury"
Smith and Murphy.
The problem for manager Russ
Nixon in his attempt to keep from
being added to the long list of
fired Braves managers is trying to
find the right combination of players
and grouping them together so
that they will perform more like a
team and less like a group of
individuals.
The Braves seem to suffer from
a losing mentality. All of the hitters
think that they need to hit a
homerun every at-bat, and all of
the pitchers think they need a
strikeout every pitch, and this
only adds to the problem. Sometimes
I get the feeling that they are
inct waiting for something had to
happen to them.
TTie lack of patience shown by
the Atlanta press and fans only add
to the pressure.
Before the season an Atlanta

Come on guys, have some

To add to the comedy, the
Braves front office has hired Jim
Varney, of Ernest fame, to do
some publicity work.

To add to the Braves frustrations,
they just happen to be in the
same division with what I think is
the best team in baseball ? the
Cincinnati Reds. The Reds are
playing as good as the Braves are
bad.
Maybe baseball Commissioner
Fay Vincent will allow Pete Rose
back in baseball and old Marge
will fire Lou Pinella and ? well,
you get the picture.
The Braves just need a little
good luck.
As Braves announcer Ernie
Johnson said "a four-leaf clover, a
rabbit's foot, twelve runs scored
and shutout pitching will bring a
win every time."
Well, the eternal optimist is
through for now and since this is
the last issue of The Gamecock until
June, you won't have to hear
any more Braves talk, But. . . .
I'll see ya in the fall.
