College students don't ask enough questioi
in class, according to a University of Missoui
Columbia professor.
The average student generates only thre
questions during a 16-week course, noted Caj
dace Stout, an assistant art professor at M
who analyzed student's questions in art histoi
classes.
Three-fourths of the questions, moreove
never were actually verbalized, she added.
"Students have been socialized from grad
school to believe that asking questions is ofte
a negative behavior," Stout said. "At this tim
you often are told you are not independent
you can't figure things out on your own, so sti
dents see questioning as dependent behavior."
The 161 students participating in Stout'
study were asked to keep a record of the ques
tions they asked in class, along with those the

thought of but never verbalized. At the end of
~ the 16 weeks, only 451 questions had been
.. generated in both written and oral form. Only
113 of those questions were actually asked.
'e "A large percentage of them said they didn't
feel the need to ask questions because the lecU
ture material was adequate," Stout said. "They

for the test, a disappointing, mechanistic view

le One student suggested it might be professors'

e question so that the student understands it," said

and make students feel stupid."

Stout found that students generally did not allow
peer pressure to keep them from asking
questions. Although 35 percent of the students
said they did think about their peers when asking
questions, 81 percent did not allow peer
pressure to keep them from asking.
She also asked the students if thev feared ne
gativc opinions from the professor when they
ask questions. Forty percent admitted that they
"consider" the professors' opinions, but 86 percent
did not let it keep them from asking.
Additionally, 70 percent said the professor
actually encourages inquiry by asking openly
for questions, by showing enthusiasm, by the
use of body language and by giving thorough
