emerges is nothing less than "stellar
jazz."
It's what USC calls Stellar Jazz
Festival IV, bringing jazz greats
Marian McPartland and Marvin
Stamm to the Koger Center for an
8 p.m. performance April 18.

Orchestra for an evening of
music that promises the premiere
of a new jazz piece and even a
couple of inpromptu performances.
McPartland, one of the world's
few female jazz artists, has had a
career as performer, composer, recording
artist and teacher for more
than 50 years. Originally a classical
pianist, the London-born
McPartland fell in love with jazz
and began her career in vaudeville
theater.
She joined ENSO, the British
equivalent of the USO during
World War II, and toured Europe.
During a jam session in Belgium,
she met her future husband, Jimmy
McPartland, a renowned cornet
player from the United States.
The couple settled in the United
States in 1946. Since then, McPartland
has performed with many of
the world's leading orchestras. Her

his life, and Wright was one of his
professors at the Eastman School
of Music, Serry said.
As organizer of the annual Stellar
Jazz Festival, Serry has a personal

in jazz is fostered throughout
the state.
"Those of us who offer jazz
have to make a greater effor to see
that this kind of growth continues.
It is our responsibility to the community
to offer performers with a
high-caliber of talent," Serry said.
