One week before at the Masters,
these players ate and slept golf.
You could have cut the tension in
the air with a sand wedge.
The laid-back atmosphere at the
Heritage seems to be the perfect
remedy for golfers who had been
stressed out down at the Augusta
National pressure cooker, and they
seem to appreciate it.
Of course, not all golfers share
such an attitude. Bob Tway missed
a birdie attempt on the fourth hole
after his second shot nearly found
the cup. My friend Marc felt obliged
to compliment Tway on his
near-eagle, so on the walkway
leading to the next hole he ran up
to him and nonchalantly said, "Almost
got it in on that second one,
didn't you?"
Tway evidently did not want to
be reminded of the miss and glared
at Marc with a stare that would
have scared off the devil himself.
Needless to say, Marc didn't
speak to any more golfers that day.
One thing that amazes me every
time I come here is just how vocal
the spectators are. Every putt is
followed by a chorus of "Get in
the hole, get in the hole, get in the
hole," and every drive by "Get
down, get down, get down." True,
most of the spectators shouting are

the golfers seem to get a kick out
of it.
Sometimes, though, the alcohol
can cause fans to get a little too
loud. Last year while trying to sink
a birdie putt on 17, Mahaffey was
distracted by a group of drunk
fans. He promptly turned to the
group, asked them to shut up, and
told them they could do the drinkABC

golf.
The golf course itself is a gem.
Consistently rated the best in
South Carolina and among the top
50 in the world, Harbour Town is
characterized by narrow tree-lined
fairways leading to greens the size
of nickles. Sand and water are not
as hazardous on the front nine as
they are on the back nine, and the
swirling wind coming in off the
ocean makes the last three holes
esoeciallv daneerous. Precise, foI

fers, not overwhelming powerhitters,
are the winners here.
Another thing that suprised me
was the number of British flags
being flown. Masters champion
Nick Faldo had the largest gallery
of any golfer on Saturday, and a
number of the spectators were toting
Union Jacks. A number of
houses along the golf course also
had Queen Elizabeth's rag flying
from a deck or patio. I don't know
if these people were actually English
or were all just a bunch of British
wanna-bes because of Faldo's
success.
The end of the day brought a
perfect example of just how downto-earth
these golfers are. We were
driving away from Harbour Town
when we spotted Chip Beck taking
a leisurely walk with his two
daughters. We couldn't pass up the
chance to give a professional golfer
a little morale booster.
"Way to go Chipper. Go get 'em
tomorrow, Chipper."
"Thanks, fellas. You guys have
a nice evening," he said.
We did.

game of the USC
Invitational.

Then USC took the lead back

Stacy Agee who was 2-for-3
from the plate on the day.

to the finale.
Angie Lear picked up the win
in the Lady Gamecocks' first
game but took the loss in the finale.
Lear's record is 24-10.
The Lady Gamecocks will
now, travel to Chattanooga, Tenn.
