As the USC tennis team continues
their rise to national prominence,
sophomore Louie Gloria's
role has also risen.
And Gloria has accepted the
challenge. v
Coming into the season, Gloria
was expected to contribute in the
top to middle singles positions and
to help anchor doubles play.
After eighteen dual matches this
season, Gloria is 14-4 witn wins
coming against some of the top
teams in the country.
He now has a solid hold on the
number two singles position (AilAmerican
senior Stephane Simian
plays number one.)
Gloria also has teamed with junior
Erick Sydow to form the
17th-ranked doubles team in the
nation.
"He (Gloria) has been a pleasant
surprise," USC head tennis coach
Kent DeMars said. "He has done a
tremendous job for us in both singles
and doubles."
Since locking down the number
two position in singles, Gloria has
won eight of nine matches. He has
big wins over LSU's Johan Milbrink
and Doug Eisenham of CalBeikley.
He has also beaten Gunner
Saluma of Indiana and Bryan
Jones of North Carolina.
All of these performers were top
number two players. Gloria's stock
is rising.
"My ranking right now is 41
(nationally in singles play) and it
should move up. The new rankings
will come out on Monday," Gloria
said. "If I can get into the low thirties
or high twenties, then I can get
an at-large bid to the NCAA's. If

Gloria's career singles record,
spanning eight tournaments, is
35-12.
He has made it to the quarterfinals
in six of the eight tournaments
and has made it to the semifinals
four timp.s
In doubles play, Gloria and Sydow
teamed for a 25-9 record last
season.
They hold down the number two
doubles position this season behind
Simian and^ junior Dave Hopper.

wasn't much of a doubles player,"
Gloria said. "Eric was also a freshman
and since we already had a
