The USC tennis team upset
third-ranked Georgia 6-3 at the
Sam Daniel Tennis Center
Thursday.
After six singles matches, the
teams were tied at three matches
apiece. Winning for USC was Stephane
Simian, who defeated A1
Parker 6-2, 6-4. Louie Gloria defeated
Mike Morrison 6-4. 2-6.
6-4. Mark Palus captured the
Gamecocks other victory by defeating
Jim Childs 6-1, 6-3.
"We're coming together," USC
head coach Kent Demars said after
the win. "This could be as good as
last year's team . . . I'm really
proud."
In the first doubles match, Jamie
Frontera and Dirk Hahneiser defeated
Morrison and Patricio Arnold
in a second set tiebreaker to
win 6-3, 7-6.

The USG baseball team held off
a ninth-inning rally to win Wednesday's
exhibition game 13-11
over the Columbia Mets.
The Gamecocks return to Metro

The Mets, from the South Atlantic
League, scored four runs in the
bottom of the ninth but could not
close the gap.
USC pounded out 17 hits in the
contest. Brian Williams and Joe
Gmitter had two hits apiece while
Jeff Parnell and Jovi McAndrew
each hit a two-run homer and a
single.
John Metzger got the win on the
mound for USC, and Craig Makar
picked up the save. Greg Langbehn
was credited with the loss.

The Bearcats, who will be playing
their first Metro game of the
season, return to Sarge Frye Sunday
for a 2 p.m. game.
