Studies show
college sex
stays same
By The Associated Press
BOSTON ? College students
are more likely to use condoms
these days, but otherwise their sexual
practices have changed little in
the last 14 years despite the advent
of AIDS, a survey published today
shows.
The study, conducted at Brown
University, found that college women
reported just as much poten
tially risky sexual behavior last
year as they did in 1975, before
AIDS and some other sexually
transmitted diseases became
concerns.
The results "indicate that public
health campaigns have not had a
substantial influence on the habits
and behavior of these welleducated
young adults," said the
study in today's New England
Journal of Medicine.
The survey, led by Dr. Barbara
DeBuono, found that 12 percent of
women in 1975 said their partners
always used condoms. This increased
to 21 percent in 1986 and
41 percent in 1989.
But the number of sex partners
or the frequency of high-risk sex
since 1975 remained virtually the
same. In 1989, nine percent of the
women engaged in anal intercourse,
and 21 percent had more
than three sex partners during the
year.
