USC senior wins Presser music scholarship
Mary Clare Hill has been selected as the University of South Car
olina's Presser Scholar.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James T. Hill of Summerville, she i
a senior music major at USC.
The $1,200 scholarship was awarded on the basis of Hill's GP/
and accomplishments as a musician, said William Moody, director o
USC's School of Music.
Hill has been the principal saxophone player for the USC Sym
phonic Band, lead alto with the Left Bank Band and a musical arran
ger for USC's Jazz Combo program.
The Presser Foundation, established in Pennsylvania in honor of th<
late publisher Theodore Presser, chooses colleges across the nation t<
participate in its scholarship program. Each college selects one Presse
Scholar.
Small business center gets U. S. Defense granl
A federal agency working with the U. S. Department of Defense ha
awared a competitive grant of more than $205,000 to the Frank L
Roddey Small Business Development Center of South Carolina.
"This is the fourth consecutive year that the Defense Logistic
Agency has funded the center's Procurement Technical Assistance
Program, which helps small business clients compete for federal con
tracts," said Judy Radin Sidlow, the center's procurement director.
Through its procurement program, the SBDC counsels small busi
ness clients on government procurement methods. The center alsi
uses a computer system to match its clients with appropriate federa
contracts available for bid.
The program has helped the SBDC triple the amount of federal con
tracts its clients are receiving, Sidlow said. In December 1989, th
center assisted clients in obtaining federal contracts amounting ti
more than $4 million.
Professor to lecture on Meno's Puzzle
Professor David Evans of The Queen's University of Belfast wil
present a lecture, "Meno's Puzzle," at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 21 in Gam
brell Hall Room 152.
He is a professor of Logic and Metaphysics and director of hi:
school's philosophical and anthropological studies. Among his book:
are Aristotle s Concept of Dialect, Truth and Proof and Aristotle.
