USC Head Basketball Coach
George Felton and his troops could
have faced disaster after the loss of
three key players. That depletion
limited Felton to only five players
who saw action last year.
But Felton has quickly learned
ho r>on rniint on Prir Svlfpc for
more than senior leadership.
Felton's only senior has risen to
the occasion. The 6-foot-6-inch
forward had accepted his role as a
backup, but the depletion of the
team roster thrust him into his first
starting role as a Gamecock Monday
night against Augusta College.
Sykes responded by scoring 18
points ? a career high and one
point less than his season output a
year ago.
He tallied 8 points against Memphis
State on Saturday and 15
points against Davidson last Thursday
to give him a 13.6 scoring average
over his last three games.
"Coach Felton told me to work
hard and good things would happen
for me, so I'm working hard,"
Sykes said.
He scored nine of USC's first
13 points against Augusta college.
"Sykes was a gangbuster," Augusta

The USC basketball team '
needed a big lift after the heart- j
breaking loss to Memphis State on
I Saturday, and they got it with a
75-50 win over Augusta College
on Monday night at the Frank
McGuire Arena.
USC built a commanding 39-15
lead at the half and never looked
back. It was USC's 250th career
1 win at the Frank McGuire Arena.

the game at 61-21 following a
three-point shot by sophomore
guard Bojan Popovic.
Felton said the win would be a
good boost for an upcoming road
swing.
"Starting Thursday we've got
three road games in five days, so
we definitely needed the win to get
us going," he said.
USC was successful despite the
