head football coach Sparky Woods
and staff have received a verbal
committment from one of the top
high school linebackers in the
country ? Conway's Lawrence
Mitchell.
Mitchell's physical attributes
speak for themselves. He is 6'6"
and weighs 220 pounds.
He led Conway High School in
tackles his junior year with 117 ?
64 of those unassisted. He had
three fumble recoveries ? one returned
for a touchdown, caused
five fumbles and had 12 tackles
for a loss.

Tigers in meet
The USC swim teams swept
Clemson in a double dual meet at
the Carolina Natatorium Saturday.
The 18th-ranked USC men's
team was behind after three events
but came back to capture a 68-45
win.
The women's matchup saw two
top-20 teams go head-to-head. The
19th-ranked Lady Gamecocks defeated
the 17th-ranked Lady Tigers
179.5-121.5.

Jerry Richardson that WilliamsBrice
stadium will not be available
for an Aug. 12 exhibition game between
the Washington Redskins
and Atlanta Falcons, a newspaper
reported Sunday.
. But the stadium might be used
for a Sept. 2 exhibition game by a
rival group for whom the spokesman
is Roman Gabriel, a former

Jordan.

rather than the other schools after

The USC men, who evened their
record at 3-3, were led by Ray
Burton who won the 50-meter
freestyle with a time of 20.95 and
the 100-meter freestyle with a time
of 46.28.
Sophomore Isabelle Arnould
won three events for the Lady
Gamecocks who improved their record
to 4-2.
Arnould won the 200-meter
freestyle with a time of 1:50.84,
the 500-meter freestyle with a time
of 4:49.63 and the 1,000-meter
freestyle with a time of 10:03.38.
Freshman Anne Wozniak was a
double winner in the 50-meter and
100-meter freestyles with times of
24.06 and 52.20.

After surveying locations in the
Carolinas for a possible NFL expansion
team, Richardson announced
earlier this year that he
would build the stadium in downtown
Charlotte.
"We tried to arrange a preseason
game in Columbia based on
commitments we made last year,"
Richardson said. "It was our hope
and expectation this year we could
sponsor a pre-season game in
South Carolina. It appears we
aren't going to be able to do that,
therefore we are working on sponsoring
a pre-season game in North
Carolina."
