Meet Don Blanchard, a junior journalism major
who would eventually like to manage a radio
station after graduation. Meet Parnell Digs,
a junior political science major who plays basketball,
wrestles and would eventually like to
go on to law school.
Both Blanchard and Digs have a few things
in common. They both are members of the organization
AWARE and they are both blind.
AWARE is USC's first organization made up
of students concerned about the many challenges
facing individuals with all types of disabilities.
"We want people to realize that we're capable
of doing a lot of things. We're not looking
for a heartache story. All we want is equal opportunity
education," Blanchard said.
According to AWARE, there are at least 110
students with disabilities who attend USC. Of
those students, 15 are visually impaired, 19
have some type of learning disabilty and 44 are
mobility impaired? Students who use manual or
power wheel chairs and other assistive equipment
are considered mobility impaired.
Forty two percent of USC's buildings are
fully accessible to individuals who use wheel
chairs, 31 percent are partially accesible and 27
percent are completly inaccesible.
"What we mean by accessible is, for example,
putting electronic doors on all the buildings
for die students who are quadriplegics," said
Parnell, president of AWARE.
"Imagine waiting outside of a builiding in the
nonrinp rain, waitine for somebodv to ooen a
door for you. Think how frustrating that can be
for a quadriplegic," added Digs.
